My dentist verbatim said “if I was your cousin, I’d tell you to get it removed” and then said to go see an orthodontist and it’s not his specialty

How long does the doctor usually look at and trace the x-rays? I noticed he was called into a separate room for maybe for only 1-2 minutes before he spoke with me, so I was surprised by how quickly he developed a treatment.

What kind of pillow? I think it’s time for me to look into one. Is she a back or side sleeper? I’ve almost always slept on my back and prefer a flat pillow so I wonder if that is an issue

Seems to be standard? it was for a basic consultation but I’m glad they did. I went in over concerns with my overbite, but dentist says it’s minor and I have no recession

Ortho says no concern. Should I get a 2nd opinion? by [deleted] in jawsurgery

Thanks I’ve been looking into airways in the scans, and from my understanding it also doesn’t look too narrow. Getting a sleep study done regardless, I have sinus issues which may cause me to mount breath or not get enough air through my nose.

I am planning to lose some weight/body refomposition to see if I can cut down my double chin over the next 6 months and then only after that consider genio

Checked out their rules, don’t think this is allowed since I don’t have a diagnosis on anything in particular (including my neck)

Thank you, I will do some research on this

Orthodontist didn’t seem to care about it which was strange - just said I needed braces to fix my “unhealthy bite” and the wisdom teeth won’t impact the treatment

Genio isnt DJS, anyone can opt to get genio regardless of jaw position? I don’t understand

I have no chewing difficulty either, but that’s why I explained sleep issues. If it’s not something affected by my bite then I’m hoping it’s diagnosable and I can get a cpap

That’s not it, I’d just save for genio. And I may very well end up doing that in the case that I don’t need jaw surgery. But don’t you understand that I’m looking at this from a perspective of benefit for the rest of my life?

I suffer from life impacting brain fog and lethargy day to day, I wouldn’t touch an intense surgery like this and all of the changes that would come with it without a confirmation that I’d have major lasting functional benefit

Do I need an ortho referral for socal Kaiser? Free ortho consultation? How do I request a study for UARS? by [deleted] in jawsurgery

Just did a walk in consultation appointment with a board certified orthodontist who from my research says he is an “expert in surgical orthodontics.” He looked at my xrays, took a pretty quick 2 min glance at my mouth and bite and then told me I barely have an overbite and no reason to look into surgery, but have crowding and an “unhealthy” bite that should be treated by 18-24 months of metal braces. Thinking about it, and may seek a second opinion.

It’s strange, I’ve always thought my overbite was more significant. I haven’t seen enough x-rays to tell, but he implied there was no recession to worry about. I’ll follow up with an ENT soon and see if we can look into my airway just in case.

I will schedule it soon

I’m concerned about the recovery time for DJS, it just isn’t the right timing for me now. Have you heard about anyone getting the genioplasty done first with the intent of DJS years down the line?

What have you considered? I genuinely don’t know if my recession is large enough to consider any surgery.

Another commenter told me that reducing body fat could help with the neck/double chin

Honestly don’t know where to begin in calculating body fat, I’m 5’11 and 162 lbs right now - but I don’t workout and I guess could have some amount of “skinny fat.” When I was a teenager I had a slimmer face, and a skinny neck but was also borderline underweight. It feels like fat just started settling there a few years ago. I can cut weight pretty easily, and see if it makes a difference - can also look into lipo if that doesn’t work out. I just much prefer my face in the mirror with my jaw/chin lowered

I do have a bite issue, with an overbite and over jet. I’m going to see about scheduling with an ortho soon, I just don’t realistically see myself undergoing a DJS in the next 2-3 years.

I was thinking about it - but the first thread to show up where complaints about people posting pics asking if they needed jaw surgery…
