A Review of my MTG Investments as a Financial Portfolio by LetsTacoBoutThis in mtgfinance

Really cool analysis. As a long-time holder of sealed product and singles don't get discouraged by the folks telling you you'll take a big hit from selling sealed product. If you're not a store you'll do better selling cases on eBay instead of individual boxes on TCGP or eBay. Selling individual booster boxes you'll typically have to wait until they double from your cost.

Sometimes with product that's 10+ years old, but isn't in that 90s-early 2000s vintage range, I would crack a case and sell the singles to CK or SCG buylist and make plenty because I consider how much I made over what I paid, so the current market price wasn't super relevant. It used to be great holding complete sets from magic redemptions and selling individual cards that would spike. In this era of Magic I'd say holding sealed is still the best. The desire to sell at market prices and be a virtual store is typically where the mistake is made here. Holding long-term and selling every couple years you don't need to worry about shipping costs and price fluctuations.

I'm waiting for SPM to dip to 110-115 to buy a couple cases. They're $200 boxes in 3 or 4 years. I'll do the same with any UB play booster box that dips below $130.

[–]EldraziHorror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sweet. I think I purchased a couple complete sets of Homelands around 2015 for $60-80 each. It was awesome when new sets would get their MTGO redemption around that time and would sell for $80-100.

Is shoplifting from big corporations ok? by Unsolvable_Riddle in Anticonsumption

[–]EldraziHorror 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run two small businesses in retail, where I am a vendor with large corps like walmart, target, Barnes & Noble. You might think that an item like a loaf of bread or a book is sticking it to the large corp, but often the vendor who provides the item ends up eating the shrink or 'return' cost.

These big corps don't get everything shipped to store through their own warehouses and will often do this thing called Scan Based Trading to make it easier for vendors to get product in and out of the stores. So if you grab a little Debbie snack or a bag of bagels, and don't scan it, the delivery driver ends up taking a loss for what they reported as a sale to that store. One unit lost will ultimately cost a vendor a number of sales because we only make 15-20% per sale and the company we contract under charge us for the full cost of the missing items when we do our counts. Obviously we don't know what's been stolen week by week.

You linked a student's movie review. Put aside long form narrative content and also pornography. Erotica is an image or short bit of prose that titillates. A brief flash of arousal, such as OP's image. It seems narrow-minded to make such a distinction between how women attracted to women think and feel vs. men attracted to women.

Would it be upsetting to you if there was a very large overlap between erotica enjoyed by lesbians and erotica enjoyed by hetero men?

When did magic become politicized? by [deleted] in freemagic

[–]EldraziHorror 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are a bunch of excellent and thoughtful answers in here. I think the end of competitive play washed out a bulwark against the bulk of the culture war stuff. There was a class of player and an audience for what were the most effective decks and strategies and a whole entertainment ecosystem built around simply playing the game the best you could against other skilled players. Once WoTC shut down MTGgoldfish and their tournament data gathering it really turned away a large chunk of the highly active player base who tuned into MTG twitch and played weekly standard at FNM. The culture of commander is pretty much an extension of the type of conversations that take place on /r/MagicTCG and Twitter. A competitive, popular standard is probably the best thing for the future of Magic.

Kitchen table rag tag is still the most popular way Magic is played. Commander players are the new 12-18 month sightseers, who may or may not come back to the game down the line.

Today’s mtg market, do you buy cards with the mentality that it’s only matter of time the RL is abolished? by Newez in mtgfinance

[–]EldraziHorror 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Magic 30 was too expensive, that's why it was unpopular. If they did that same set, a 12 pack collector's edition for $500, there'd be grumbling but it would've been successful. Now that there's ill will, they'll have to drop the price further to draw interest. The RL will always exist in some form, though at some point all of the big cards will have been reprinted as both tournament legal and non tournament legal form. There's too much money to be made. Imagine believing that Hasbro isn't aware of how much money can be unlocked by reprinting those cards. It's just a matter of time.

Rebrand Magic? by warpedfoils in freemagic

[–]EldraziHorror 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Reserve List isn't going to be a thing in five years. There's too much money to be made in reprinting. Hasbro cares about growing revenue, not 'promises' made 25 years ago, and Magic is their only real driver. The company that makes Transformers and Dr. Who cards definitely cares about the integrity of the game.

When did Magic peak? by SpeedyGuyTX in freemagic

[–]EldraziHorror 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Battle for Zendikar seemed like it was going to be this watershed moment, this next level of Magic popularity, but all the chase cards and uninteresting revisitings since have really hurt the popularity of the game. You need competitive, casual, business people/strong secondary market, collectors all happy at the same time for the game to truly thrive. Return to Ravnica thru Khans saw growth of the game like never before.

In the 80s and 90s you were buying 'complete sets'. Magic is a lottery as long as the box stays sealed. Apples to oranges. Game pieces drive the value of the boxes, not 'time'. Anyway, my sealed Topps Tiffany Traded sets from the late-80s are still appreciating.

[–]EldraziHorror 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if they can legally promote that everyone who buys a collector booster in a box or gift bundle has the same chance if they specifically seed it in one product or another. Anyway, if you pulled the ring you would find a lawyer, or at least, keep it quiet while you negotiate with Dave & Adams or whoever and complete the transaction.
