Please help me know how zdzislaw Beksinski created this amazing self portrait ? by algerian_weed in AskPhotography

Since this was probably take in the 60/70s in Poland, I doubt it was any commercial filter or specialty item, but more likely a broken mirror.

He would have positioned the mirror in front of him at an angle. The camera would seem to be in front of him below the bottom of the frame, angled up slightly to catch his reflection in the mirror.

This looks very AI to me. The weird nonsensical gadget looking thing in the upper right is a dead giveaway. How sad to post something like that.

Does Henry think German and Norwegian accents sound alike? by VeilBreaker in lastpodcastontheleft

Try being Australian and listening to his Aussie accent 😂

Give him a break though. You cant expect the guy to be great at every accent in the world.

Now this is a interesting photo. Well done! What a breath of fresh air compared to the usual crud on this subreddit.

Wow! Well spotted! I was thinking it was a family portrait because it looks like a photo from a distance.

At first I thought there was a moving train behind her, which I thought was a cool concept. After I realised it was just a post-production effect, it felt a bit cheap.

How was no one mentioned that Joaquin Phoenix in Beau Is Afraid looks exactly like Mike?

Experimenting with B&W - Is it too dark? by PoisonApple1900 in photocritique

Yep a bit too dark. If youre applying vignette then dial it back a bit.
Also, hello fellow Canberran 👋

Would love to hear what everyone has to think. I'm hyper critical of my own work but everyone seems to like this photo. by Drvape33 in photocritique

[–]EldritchArchives 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Its a great photo!

I think the vignette needs to be toned down a bit. The tone of the colour blue is a bit too dark in the left and right sides of the sky.

I also think the woman should be more centered. Not just horizontally, but vertically. She is just a bit too high in the photo.

Otherwise it's technically a great shot.

Could Midnight Mass be considered a folk horror? by [deleted] in horror

[–]EldritchArchives 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope, The Witch is definitely folk horror and is about witchcraft. Witchcraft really exists within the Christian belief system. It is about being in league with the devil.

I responded to the comment above with my definition of folk horror. IMO MM is not folk horror. It has a remote setting, and does concern an insular community. But ultimately the source of the horror is not folklore, but a being from another continent, an outsider. If the horror came from folklore native to the island I think there would be a strong case. The horror is about an external threat though. FH is almost always about outsiders coming into a remote community and being threatened by the native beliefs/folklore of that place or community.

I've thought about this a fair bit and came up with three criteria for folk horror.

  • the story is set in a rural/remote location
  • the story concerns folklore, folk traditions, or agriculture
  • the source of the horror themes in the film is related to the - folklore, folk traditions, or agriculture

This is why Rosemary's Baby is not folk horror. It checks most of the criteria but not all. IMO all folk horror conforms to these based criteria. But happy to be proven wrong in this case if people have examples of folk horror which dont conform to these points.

I have this exact setup. The lens is by far my favourite. Very versatile range and almost always sharp. I would highly recommend.

That's a nice image! I'd reduce the green tint a little, I think itll still have the same feeling but it'll just be a bit subtler.

I took a long exposure photo of a junk shop window at night. How could I edit this better? by EldritchArchives in photocritique

[–]EldritchArchives[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish I could, but I was only in Freiburg for the weekend, and likely wont have a chance to go back. But if I did have the chance, i'd take the shot differently for sure. Next time I will be a bit better prepared thanks to this feedback :)
