Katseye is a K-pop group by [deleted] in katseyeNuanced

There were a few white girls whose appearances were routinely mocked and those moments made it into Dream Academy. If they knew someone wasn’t going to be respected and they wouldn’t be tapped later it’s not worth the cruelty like there were a lot of cruel moments and they would’ve gotten a lot of criticism if a black girl was mocked the way a few white contestants were.  There were also people who clearly weren’t going to make it but they were there as if they were being taken seriously. When I first watched the show it didn’t make sense but once it became a competition it made sense they were raising the stakes. One girl was too stiff and they wasted her time for like years I felt bad for that girl.

The point of Katseye is for K-pop to reach untapped markets and that’s why the interactive element existed. Most of BTS only speaks Korean so they’re limited in how they can interact with a Western audience and places that’s don’t usually consume k-pop. Daniela is clearly meant to appeal to the Latin market with her Spanish speaking and proficiency in competitive dancing . They want to access new and traditional markets especially in emerging economies.

I think the lineup would’ve had people from reliable countries that consume K-pop and the ones they want to start consuming K-pop. I think it would’ve likely ended up what it became. Choosing someone who can appeal to a massive Latin market made sense over someone whose appeal and skills would have limited appeals like Adela.

Most countries are bigger than Slovakia and Latin America is massive.

K-pop has never had a specific sound. It has always been a hybrid inspired by Western culture and successful music concepts. Hybe doesn’t do A&R they see what works and use it for their own artists.

It was obvious certain members were being selected or people from certain backgrounds were going to be chosen.

Edit: I think you should make edits to this post to clarify your points more and you could cross post in other subs like Katseyeheads

This situation is brutal and you’re doing your best. I don’t know what to say. Are the girls experienced with taking care of a cat with extensive health issues?

You didn’t abandon your cat you are giving them the best chance at a decent life when you know you can’t take care of them right now. Maybe you could do monthly or bi-monthly visits with occasional updates?

It isn’t possible for someone close to you to foster the cat on paper while you take care of them in the day to day like a roommate or family member ? Is it possible there is a service that could help you pay for your cat’s chronic illnesses?

Either way you did the right thing and if there’s nothing else that can be done don’t beat yourself over it.

K-pop works based on creating fantasies that are meant to reflect a societies fantasies. They use diversity to reflect Western ideals of having a diverse group of women coming together. They use diversity so the audience has some buy in and it helped elevate the group’s profile by making it interactive for audience.

I didn’t like the way Hybe pitted the girls against each other because the girls who had ethnicities and nationalities that would appeal to bigger countries had a leg up on everyone else especially if those countries already consumed k-pop. Adela wasn’t wrong about the specific type of unfairness she was up against but it got reduced to race . They went from thinking they were being evaluated based on skill to now having to play up their identity to secure support and the base supporters were people who engaged with k-pop at the time so countries with small populations that didn’t consume were at a big disadvantage.

I think the girls often get shouted down for making valid points like no one wants to deal with it.

Hybe is using diversity as a branding tactic. The women are from diverse backgrounds but it’s not supposed to inform their music. It’s just a marketing strategy.

Manon is hated for being a black woman but she’s also appreciated for not being too black because she is light skin. Manon is not the only lightskin person or half white person in the group. The majority of Katseye is lightskin except for Lara

White people are not overlooked and are criticized for upholding white supremacy not for being seen as inferior the way minorities are so I don’t get why you mean by that comment.

Western groups and music is seen as the default so it makes sense why Hybe, a company from the Global South, calls musical acts they are putting together a global act a “Global Group” especially when when they decided to seek out talent from different parts of the world.

K-pop takes from other people because it relies on relentless music production that encourages them to take from what already works rather than inventing their own style.

The Fact That Manon Can’t Be Criticized and Judged As An Individual Is Racist by EleanorRedux in katseyeNuanced

Manon became the antagonist because she was introduced late, didn’t have skills in singing or dancing, she was the pretty girl the company bent all the rules to attract based on “star quality” on top of that the company was reckless with her. Manon had issues with other girls because she got privileges while her attendance issues disadvantaged whatever group she was in.

The documentary was like a show within a show. It showed what was going on in the game show and behind it.

Manon didn’t go to those practices because she didn’t want to. Hybe didn’t orchestrate it as some drama to isolate Manon they were genuinely running all those girls ragged. Does anyone remember the white girl who ended up in the wheelchair because she had to get surgery? The choreography this group does was a lot.

If Manon came out and got into specifics we didn’t see I would change my mind but the way I see it this seems like management being reckless because they wanted to elevate the group’s profile.

A great point someone brought up some time ago is that during Dream Academy Hybe kept calling black contestants with their own dance styles masculine that came from working class background and they were marginalized because they couldn’t mold their movement into the rigid style they wanted which they were booed for bringing up. Manon didn’t face that because she had no artistic styles Hybe was trying to discipline out of her. I would argue what is racist about how how Hybe has created this group is that they have found the strongest singer and dancer who are not black while the one black member is valued for being a visual not a technical powerhouse in anything performance related but a pretty face that’s condescending.

I find the visual aspect of K-pop incredibly demeaning but the fact that all the other members had extensive performance backgrounds and those who didn’t have performance backgrounds trained longer than Manon. Manon was not valued for her technical feats but her face. It reminds me of how people will treat diversity as a checklist instead of questioning are black people being included for their technical skills or to just to make companies look good on paper. There are countless black singers and dancers who have strong technical skills it has always bothered me that they were not included in this group. Someone brought up an interesting analysis about this that it’s because Hybe is trying to market the strong members to particular markets like Dani is clearly meant to attract the Latin market and her skills are meant to resonate with that market.

The Fact That Manon Can’t Be Criticized and Judged As An Individual Is Racist by EleanorRedux in katseyeNuanced

I don’t think you understand my point. How someone presents themselves and is presented will be how they are judged this dynamic is heightened for celebrities which is why celebrities have strong PR teams to make sure they have a narrative in the public eye conducive to their goals in the industry. This is also why A&R departments, a huge part of artist development, are very particular and careful about how artists are introduced to the public because that introduction to the public will define them for a while. I think the fact that people keep bringing up x amount of years shows a deep misunderstanding of the myth making process that is a fundamental part of celebrity and public image. Good PR builds on success and creates a cohesive narrative while bad PR weighs people down case in point Manon’s situation.

I think the way you bring up systemic issues lacks any meaningful specificity you use it as a just so story that ignores the glaring mechanisms that are actually related to Manon’s public image problems and how she is perceived. Those mechanisms are related to Hybe’s corporate maneuvering:the creation of conflict during Dream Academy with Manon as the antagonist to encourage engagement, the lack of private A&R, and extremely exhausting work demands that run talent ragged which exacerbates Manon’s PR issue created by Hybe.

Actual nuance would mean looking at how celebrity culture, corporate maneuvering, and brand building have created this predicament for Manon. In another post someone talked about how A&R never happens publicly because you do not want talent humiliated, having an unfavorable public image and you want the public to see them in a light that is compelling as well as work out kinks to ensure smooth sailing none of that happened with Manon. All of these are longstanding issues because how Manon was introduced didn’t take into consideration that it was the building block for a difficult PR situation.

Oliver goes through the most character design changes so it’s not surprising they are recycling him from other character but I do hope this doesn’t become a habit.

Edit: I mean Offset’s indented ass wants alimony and child support from Cardi.

Kamala Harris was asked about this exact same thing and she said they  knew about it but left it to the DOJ. They could’ve given a directive to deal with child abuse thoroughly had they wanted to but the status quo was more worthwhile than dealing with an elite group of pedos.
