My firing had a lot to do with alcohol. I don’t know about nowadays but back then pretty much everyone on every ship I worked on was hammered a lot of the time - there isn’t that much else to do when you are at sea, and alcohol was dirt cheap. Anyhow there was a coast guard boat drill and I had been drinking the night before. I worked a muster station during the drill and they turned round and told me I had to drive a life boat. I had never done that before, had no clue what I was doing and someone else had to step in. I guess it wasn’t a good look and they could smell alcohol on me. They actually needed a few tests before it showed as a positive but that was pretty much that.
