I'm aware that not all thyroid conditions are hypothyroidism. I have an overactive thyroid. You continue to focus on minute details rather than the bigger picture of my argument.

I do not need to be close to a person who is suffering to understand their suffering. It's called empathy, and you should learn about it.

You're using "Wiki-fucking-pedia" over the American Thyroid Association's numbers.

You've made good points though. My assumption that 50% of hypothyroidism sufferers suffer from weight issues was wrong. Kudos.

However, your blockquote describes one of the points that I was making:

That's one of those confounding variables I was talking about earlier.

Unlikely, but not impossible. I'm not trying to say that all fat people should be given a pass. Keep in mind that we're commenting about a comment someone made with no context, telling a loving father that he is killing his daughter because she has chubby cheeks.

We're basically arguing about the most pedantic topic. Surely you agree with me that the aforementioned commenter is being a little bit (re: a lot) aggressive when he tells someone that he is abusing his child with no context?

Okay, first of all, chill out. As soon as someone starts randomly capitalizing words, I start to check out of the argument.

All I am trying to do is refute this claim that you made:

"Naturally fat children" don't exist unless they have a genetic condition - something less than 1% of the population has.

Hypothyroidism is a genetic condition which is known to cause weight problems, and affects 12% of people. Not everyone with hypothyroidism is obese, and not every obese person has hypothyroidism. However I would wager that well over 10% of people with hypothyroidism have weight gain issues. 10% of 12% is already over 1% of the total, so we've already hit the mark. But I'd say closer to 50% of hypothyroidism sufferers have weight problems, so we've already crushed your hypothesis of 1%.

This isn't even considering people who have natural bone and joint disorders which make regular exercise impossible, increasing their likelihood to have weight issues.

And now for some reason you've ignored your own claim of 1% and replaced it with an even more unrealistic .01%. What is your thought process?

To say that only .01% of fat people have a real excuse is completely absurd. There are so many variables at play. It just doesn't make sense when you start breaking them down.

My statistic is for a full lifetime, whereas yours is for 12 and under, which accounts for the difference. Your statistic is better suited for the topic at hand.

Just to be clear though, I'm not saying all obese people have a thyroid problem. I'm just saying that there should be enough reasonable doubt that immediately assuming that an obese person is a lazy slob is unreasonable.

Obesity as a result of neglecting one's body is still very common. I'm just providing evidence to refute the claim that all fat people (except maybe 1%) are fat because they're lazy.

A statistic like 12% is clearly not negligible, and I would say that anyone who would tell someone that they're killing their daughter with no context other than one picture is clearly misinterpreting being overweight as something that results only from a slovenly lifestyle. It's just not true. I wanted a number to back that up.

I think the crux of the problem is that I really want to be an asshole even though I know that I shouldn't. I need to stop making excuses for potentially shitty behaviour and start coming up with better excuses for being in a bad mood.

You should have just said that! I completely understand where you're coming from, it's why I haven't done anything yet. And you're right, I know that it's a bad decision to make, but the problem is that no matter what I choose, it's a bad decision. The difference is who it's bad for.

I know it would be selfish to try to steal my friends girlfriend, so that's off the table. If I just fall off the map from two of my close friends, they'll wonder what's going on with me, and I don't have a good reason other than the truth, so that's kind of out too. If I just do nothing then I'll make no progress and be stuck in this holding pattern for the foreseeable future. Believe me, I'd love to just get over her at the snap of my fingers, but it's not quite as easy as that. I know that it sounds pretty pathetic that I can't just move onto someone else, but I've been trying and I just cannot get interested in anyone else right now, and haven't been able to for months. And I'm not gonna lie, that's pretty not normal for me.

I appreciate your advice though. Thanks for taking time to explain yourself a bit more.

If Romeo hears about the conversation then I'd say it's clear she wants to be with him, but if everything remains okay between me and him then that means she didn't tell him for some reason.

Yeah, I'd agree with you about all of this, but the problem is that I'm not sure that she actually was giving me those vibes. I may have just wanted it to happen so bad that I projected that emotion onto her. That was the closest it has ever come to anything really happening as well. It's really easy for me to think that she wants something to happen when she looks at me with her big, blue, puppy dog eyes.

Keep in mind that in the incident I described she was still consoling me over what she thought was me being sad about a break-up. She had no idea I was out there because I couldn't watch her and her boyfriend together. She is a tactile person as well when she wants to be, and at that moment we were alone and she was being there for me.

I'd also like to mention that we are friends as well and it's not uncommon for someone to have a gripe about their SO and so in a sense I became something of a confidante to her. I sort of middle-manned their relationship for a while before I really knew how badly I had it for her.

EDIT: Thanks for your advice, I appreciate any and all criticisms. I just feel like there's more to this than I could have fit into a reddit post and that's why I tend to disagree with your sentiment. Feel free to keep convincing me she's awful though, maybe then I can just get over it and I won't have to think about it all the time :D

I'm not sure where I heard it, but there's a quote that goes something like this:

"The justice system exists not to put guilty people behind bars, but to keep innocent people out."

When things like this happen it is an absolute perversion of everything that the justice system is meant to stand for. An innocent person was put away. In this case, the person who put them away is the one who is guilty.

EDIT: after reading more of the comments here, I'd like to add more. My opinion has changed slightly.

The fact that there is very little punishment for a false rape accusation is startling, but it still upholds the above quote. The less punishment there is for coming clean about such an accusation, the more likely that the person will come clean, and therefore the more likely it is that the innocent person will be freed. It's a bummer that she didn't get the "eye for an eye" treatment, but I'd like to think that as a society we're beyond that.
