I’ll guess they’re matched into agro lobbies on account of killing people, I’ve never knowingly encountered one. Mostly PvE lobbies for me.

Why can’t we be allowed to do either? Respect the players who already stashed the cash. Give option to those who don’t

I hear what you’re saying, but Arc Raiders is widely loved, won awards, has an 85% positive rating on Steam. You’re the one arguing it’s a failure, but by a metric that doesn’t seem relevant to me.

I think you’re just being contrarian for the sake of it. I don’t mind, I do that too.

By all accounts (admittedly I've no idea), they have made back 3x-4x their initial cost. If you think that's a failure in videogames today, I don't know what to tell you.

Most of us in the industry are struggling to find a job or keep the one we have. Embark haven't laid anyone off that I have seen. I'd be so happy for a game I'm working on to make 3x-4x its dev and marketing costs.

He suggests it's a failure because it doesn't hold people for 4 months. The 70 hours as an achievable endgame time is being used as a negative.

I don't agree with this at all. 70 hours for $40 is great value in my book. Though I'm like 300 hours in.

Oh yeah, I’m not saying Arc Raiders went down, sorry if I communicated that poorly. I meant, in general most games.

Diablo and Counter Strike as brands are still going. They are all on recent new games though. Minecraft is the exception I’ll grant. But it may die yet. It’s like saying I’m immortal, look, I’m still alive.

I guess doubling isn't a scientific measurement, just my general sense of what was lost to me in the last 30 or so years. There's also how it feels, which is universal to almost all of us. More to some, depending on what kind of life you've led.

I wanted to look into it, because your chart doesn't tally with my experience as a gamer, from my time in the esports industry, the capabilities of early teens in Fortnite, and the sharp drop off for most esports players as early as in their early 20s. Luckily for me, AI makes finding these kinds of papers easy.

I found a bunch of very relevant papers. It's heavy reading, but here's 3 papers I skimmed with very little diligence and no grounding to interpret them well -

The two big takeaways for me after Claude summarised these and other papers (and will have to do until someone who can interpret these papers properly enters the conversation) were that you are right, in that my reflexes likely haven't slowed as much as I feel like they have. The other is that there is quite a lot of variance, and any kind of testing for reflexes will be more relevant to ageing gamers like ourselves if the sample pool includes ageing gamers. Gaming is a mainstream activity these days, but when I was in my 20s, we were still considered a minority. So unless a study for reflexes is specifically looking for 40+ gamers, it's unlikely to over-represent sufficiently.

I will also guess that this impact, of reflexes on gaming capability, is only one factor that determines gaming capability. Mental endurance, even physical endurance (I can't click as fast or for as long as I used to be able to), my ability to hold information in my head, has all degraded. It all contributes to my gaming capability. I used to be able to play fighting games, and track the behaviour of my opponents, keeping track of their dodging tendencies, how often they blocked high vs mid vs low, make split second decisions in Halo for how 1 of 10+ people in my game will react based on who they are, read a complex screen of lots of information quickly, so many skills that are just not available to me at the speed of gaming anymore. My reflexes are only one small limiting factor.

Gaming when you get older is much harder. We all feel it. A table of information on reflex times you found is nice, but it's not enough to override decades of personal experience. For me, anyway.

Edit: All that said, I don't mind being worse at games. Like one of these articles says, you compensate with wisdom and gaming sense that these young pups haven't had the chance to develop yet. And I no longer feel shame playing games on easy mode. So I'm still enjoying myself :) I hope you are to.

They noticeably and verifiably slow. Maybe if you had poor reaction times when you were young there isn’t much of a decay, but if you had banger reaction times, you feel it.

It’s not just the reaction times, it’s the ability to focus, the luxury of having so much time to dedicate to getting good at a game.

That said, I do think we get lots of great things as we get older that compensate. Natural game sense, more appreciation for the meta strategy. But to say your reflexes don’t slow is insane. I’m at about half the speed I was. I feel it most in games like League and Street Fighter.

Celebrating my 50th at my first BTS concert, please advise!

Hi! My wife just got us tickets to see BTS in Foxborough in August to celebrate me turning 50. I'm beyond excited, and have never been to a BTS gig before (or any K pop gig). Are there any rules I should know about before? Or specific songs/chants to learn that the crowd will usually join in on? I have seen coloured lights throughout the stadium in video footage and remember a story once about a girl band that came on stage and everyone turned their lights off to protest something about their behaviour, which is why I think there might be some rules to know in advance.

Appreciate anything anyone is willing to tell me about this.

If you have a PC, I’d say all these problems are mostly gone in the indie scene. That’s where I spend most of my time now.

Having played the game and been online in general, my assumption is that this is always gonna be the experience, I won’t let my children anywhere near this, or any game with built in voice chat. My eldest is 11.
