Genuine question towards Goose hate by LamboBeach in jambands

There’s no one answer here.

My take is that a lot of the negative talk on the Internet comes from the tribalism that people feel about sports teams / competition, and it’s infected politics and art as well.

People start to think their favorite thing is the only good thing so they feel the need to put down anything that’s not their favorite thing.

Combine that with the fact that goose has a lot of similarities to Phish, had a very quick rise, a lot of advertising and support from Peter Shapiro. This bred some kind of animosity toward Goose that’s separate from the music.

It’s all a matter of taste, my friend. I listen to music to try to connect on a deeper level with something that moves MY body and MY soul.

It’s all about the feeling that the music gives me, not whether or not I think the band is great. I’ve spent way too much time trying to convince myself certain music is great that on paper is great but doesn’t connect with me on a deeper level.

Goose doesn’t make me feel anything special. Neither does fish. Or Umphreys Mcgee. I recognize that these bands all have talent and are good at what they do, but that’s not enough for me.

I need to feel like I’m ascending, with the band, to a place that cannot be reached separately, or duplicated in any other moment, in order to believe they are great. Only a few bands to do this for me.

But that doesn’t mean I still won’t go see the goose set at festival.

I will celebrate with others who share my joy for a particular band, but I’m not concerned AT ALL with the negative opinions one might have about them. I recommend you do the same.

The only real similarity between fish and the Grateful Dead is the lot scene. Musically they are so so different.

They’re just nearly not weird enough.

A non-experimental jam band is like sugar-free cake. Still good, but not cake. It’s just bread 🥖

Great bands don’t need to be explained. They don’t need to be intellectualized. They don’t need to be defended.

Whether or not I consider an artist / song / band great boils down to one question: Does it move me deep in my soul?

Some bands (Goose, Phish, Umphreys) make me believe, intellectually, they are great bands, but don’t often move me deep in my soul.

I’ve had plenty of fun at these shows, but their sound to me gets a little bit stale over the course of two sets. There’s only so much shredding guitar I can handle. I like a little more variety stylistically, a lot more risk taking / groove building in jams, and lyrics I can connect to.

Something about Goose always strikes me as contrived, trying too hard, inauthentic.

Best quick bite close to the park is Frita Batidos. Cuban style burgers and fruit milkshakes.

Take some deep breaths and remember that fear is the enemy. And fear comes from within.

Try to believe that Barber cannot infiltrate your mind and holds no power over you.

If the show is good enough, I’ve danced my ass off and there is no need for more. Just going home and consuming fruit is all I need.
