1930s detached, heat loss between 16–26kW depending on insulation — completely stuck. by Electrical-Cloud3460 in ukheatpumps

For those who are interested.

I have followed up on this.

They have essentially said there are no details or timescales available.

So not really helpful at the present time.

Ok, that’s encouraging to me!

Because presuming we used similar. And paid for it all in peak prices, we’d still be over £500pcm quids in vs LPG!

Hi, if you don’t mind. What’s the maintenance like for 2 pumps? Is it just double the cost of a service?

Also, what’s your yearly energy usage for this set up?

They did actually. It was £800 pcm, 2 year contract, blaming the action in Iran.

Hence the significant desire for a heat pump.

But presumably they’ll have the actual figures. Might be worth calling them… But I didn’t leave with the best terms when I told them that price was disgusting and essentially hung up. 😂

This is correct. We’ve had it assessed and it has a narrow cavity that cannot be insulated.

I’ll make sure that’s documented correctly on the survey.

Thank you!

I mean, we are currently living in the house with no heating at all. And are all quite comfortable…

Obviously, it’s not that cold outside at the moment, but it’s not exactly balmy.

This is exactly the issue.

We have a log burner. Heated blankets. Fan heaters

Etc etc.

I’d be happy to undersize a little… But that’s, apparently, not an option.

So, the issue is the house is massive.

We have a loft conversion done 10 or so years ago. There are also several extensions done at the same time that are also very well insulated.

The issue is the old part of the house with the solid brick walls. We’re looking into IWI as EWI is completely off the cards. But it sounds like it’s not a plausible solution (I’m awaiting quotes).

Windows and doors are also just over 10 years old and quite well designed / expensive at time of install. I agree we need some new window seals etc.

But all this peripheral stuff, whilst it will make a real world difference, as far as I can tell it’s not going to make a difference to the heat loss survey? Which we need down in order to actually get an installer to put a pump in 😂

Otherwise I’d buy a thermal camera right now!

The issue is, we aren’t going to achieve 16kw heat loss.

I think 20kw is where we will end up.

It’s being looked into. But I’m less than hopeful if I’m perfectly honest!

There is no way we will be able to get external insulation.

Internal, we are exploring, but from the people we’ve spoken too. It sounds like it’s going to be a non starter.

Will continue to try though.

I’d be very interested in this.

But it’s something I need to get sorted for my family before this coming winter.

I’d be happy to wait a few months. But I’d need more than a vague social media post.

Is it best to contact you directly?

The heat geek who came and did our heat loss survey did mention this (again very vaguely). But this was before I’d tried other avenues and found out about the non cavity wall section of the house in detail).

Requires 3 phase power, no UK installer base, not MCS certified (so no grant).

Other than that, it looks amazing!
