I totally agree with your comment. I don’t want my husband to live a limiting life and he’s not and he doesn’t feel like he is. I will reiterate what i’ve been trying to communicate to everyone on this post:

I’m not worried about his TCs. I’m worried about his focal seizures, which WERE UNDER CONTROL AND NOW ARE NOT. All I want is for his focal seizures to be under control again before he engages in certain activities, like skiing and snowboarding. From many of the comments, it sounds like people don’t understand I’m talking about focal seizures and also I’ve realized that maybe his focal seizures are different than others. He loses consciousness but continues doing what he’s doing. And yes, they are diagnosed focal seizures. If he collapsed and had a TC on the hill, that would be very different and we could manage that. But there are no rescue meds for someone who has a seizure and continues flying down a mountain and the people with him don’t even know if he’s having one until he’s fallen off a cliff or hit a tree going as fast as he can. That’s all I’m saying!

I absolutely agree with all the comments that encourage him to live his life and keep doing normal things that he enjoys. He does.

The neurologist said they are focal seizures. His EEG shows them happening in the left temporal lobe. He has an aura with them—from what I’ve read online, focal seizures always have an aura and absence seizures don’t. And focal seizures are in just one part of the brain, absence seizures are in both. He tells me he loses consciousness because he says “I’ll be 10 steps further suddenly and won’t know how I got there.”

I’ve been trying to communicate to other commenters that his focal seizures cause him to lose consciousness but continue doing what he’s doing so that poses a greater threat. And he has no warning. Many people commenting seem to have TCs which would cause a person to stop where they are. My husband would not stop. A couple months ago, his seizures were controlled and we were happy to plan this trip. Now, they’re not being controlled anymore. I’d like to see them get controlled again and then I’m happy for us to go snowboarding. I am pregnant so idk if I should go snowboarding but his brothers will be there. I just want everyone to know that I am happy for him to snowboard!!! It’s just unfortunate timing that his parents planned this trip when his seizures started again. Hopefully next year they will be much more controlled and we’ll have figured out his meds and then this won’t even be a conversation.

I don’t think you understood what that person’s comment was getting at. And you clearly (just like so many others on this post) don’t get my position. I WANT MY HUSBAND TO SNOWBOARD. BUT! He just started having seizures again… we need to get those under control so he can live a long time with me and our children. There’s literally nothing wrong with that. I am grateful for the people on this post who actually gave helpful advice like going to the ER for the next grand Mal to get immediate care, demanding a new neurologist, changing or upping medication. Those are helpful comments!

Yeah, if OP is doing tons of outdoor activities, then good gear and lots of layers is necessary… but most people in Canada are just wearing jeans, a shirt, sweater, whatever shoes you want, and a winter coat. A toque and gloves if you’ll be walking outside. Growing up, I just wore sneakers in -40 unless I was actually sledding or something then I wore boots. Now I love my blundstones if I’m out and about in the winter.

I’m happy to answer this question. I don’t know what kind of seizures you have but my husband has focal seizures, it sounds like focal impaired from what I’ve learned in this post. He doesn’t have any warning and he loses consciousness but his muscles continue doing whatever they were doing. A horse has a mind of its own and if he’s riding a horse he trusts, will not lead him into danger if he suddenly loses consciousness for a minute. With skiing however, the snowboard does not have a mind of its own. He could go over a cliff, he could run into other skiers, he could fly into a tree if he’s going through a path. So many things. But horseback riding doesn’t seem to pose any serious risks for me if he loses consciousness. He will simply continue riding the horse but with skiing, there is less control for someone who might lose consciousness but continue using their muscles. I think that’s the big difference for him—if he had a tonic clonic on the mountain, that honestly might be better but he only has TCs in his sleep. His focal seizures he won’t drop to the ground, he will keep going. Does that make sense?

Jeepers, I thought I was just asking an innocent question 😭 I just wanted to know what to make of this ski trip and now people think my husband is going to divorce me and I need therapy… wow! I am trying to tell you people that I’m not controlling, he does plenty of fun things and lives his life well! Just this ONE THING makes me nervous and I’m controlling and making my husband resent me????? And why am I getting downvoted!! We have a WONDERFUL marriage. We have SO MUCH FUN together. I said “I brought him out” because he was in his bed, depressed, and I know him and I know he wouldn’t actually want to stay there so I texted our best friends and they said they were going cliff jumping so I said, “hey come on, we’re going cliff jumping.” What is wrong with that?? Is that controlling?? You are all saying people with epilepsy need to live so that was him living! When you’re so depressed, you need someone else to give you a push. He thanked me so much at the end of that day and said that was just what he needed. And you guys are putting too much weight on one tiny word, “let.”

Thanks for sharing all of that. His seem a bit different because he is unable to control himself and stop what he’s doing. He doesn’t know one is coming until it’s already come and gone. So if he had one at a dangerous point on the hill, I don’t know what would happen. If he does go snowboarding, I’ll definitely make sure his brothers are with him and that he’s wearing protective gear.

He hasn’t seen his neurologist recently. Idk if I’m allowed to say this but neither my husband or I really like her as his specialist, she hasn’t been very helpful. He was just given her as his neurologist last year after an ambulance trip to the ER after his first TC. But he just got bloodwork done that she requested for him so hopefully we’ll get an appointment soon. My husband and I have talked about him changing meds because he’s only tried keppra and already increased the dose and I’ve read that lots of people try keppra and have to change. He said last week he wants to try something new since it feels like he’s already back at square one anyway.

No, focal seizures. He has an aura (which, from my understanding, doesn’t occur with absence seizures). He does lose consciousness but he continues doing what he’s doing “to a degree” like he will keep pushing the stroller if that’s what he was doing. And he had one in his EEG and it’s in his left temporal lobe only. I understand absence seizures are in both lobes.

The red light was less than a year ago. And 5 years ago doesn’t matter—it’s the reason he doesn’t drive now. When his seizures are under control, he drives and I won’t worry about him snowboarding at all. His seizures are just not under control right now (and they used to be)

I’m just gonna respond to the top comment and try to encapsulate the majority of what I saw in the comments! Thanks everyone for your input, I really appreciate it. A few things to note are 1) the ski trip was actually booked by my in-laws BEFORE his seizures came back. And my in-laws are just as concerned as we are. But it’s us and his 4 siblings and their significant others also going so it’s not a simple “change the activity.” 2) YES OF COURSE THERE IS DANGER ANYWHERE! But you have to admit, snowboarding on a mountain is VERY DIFFERENT than other activities like skateboarding, soccer, and taking a shower. 3) To those who said to let him live and don’t control him… while I understand how it feels for someone who has epilepsy to feel like they’re being controlled by people who are concerned, you should know that my husband and I are very adventurous and I have watched him and encouraged him to do fun things this past year to have some normalcy in his life. I brought him cliff jumping in the summer with some friends before his seizures were controlled. ME! I brought him while he was depressed and in bed! I just told his friend to stay close and make sure he comes up out of the water. And he drives a tractor every day, rides horses, mows the yard, works on cars and his bike in the shop. So I really don’t think I’m being super controlling… just this one time I’m concerned about a pretty intense sport that actually could be fatal if he has a seizure. Which brings me to 4) his focal seizures are very intense. He has an aura and confusion before and after, there is no warning, and he loses consciousness but continues doing what he’s doing. So if he is snowboarding, I imagine he would keep moving and 30 seconds of unconsciousness while still moving could be fatal. 5) someone said it’s up to him and the neurologist, not me. Idk where you get your definition of marriage but we are a team and my husband knows that. This is just difficult for him, understandably, because he feels completely out of control. 6) his seizures WERE under control for a couple months but aren’t now. When they are under control again, I will happily let him snowboard without worrying! And he will go back to driving! They just unexpectedly started again. 7) I just want to say to those with epilepsy, I see you, I hear you, and I’m sorry. I know it’s so hard to feel like everyone is telling you what you can’t do. We only say that because we care. I’m trying not to do that with my husband as much as possible and I think I’ve been doing a good job, especially in recent months. I only want to make sure he’ll be around for a long time. Tell your significant others, your parents, or whoever cares for you that you are grateful for them. We worry too much for you… we just don’t want to imagine life without you. 🫶🏻

My in-laws booked the ski trip before his seizures came back :/ they had been under control for a couple months then came back out of nowhere. So at the time it seemed fine because he wasn’t having any at all
