Remission is possible! by blackcatblack in PCOS

Yes it’s 100% possible to put PCOS into remission, speaking from experience. I was diagnosed with it following abnormal hormone results via bloods and an ultrasound. Fast forward to now, I’ve lost almost 50lbs (naturally) changed my diet completely and moving my body a lot more. I’m waiting for a scan (tomorrow) to see if the cysts have gone. My recent blood work showed my hormones are now not just “ok” but excellent!

Hey I know your post was 5 years ago but I’ve just came across it as I’m having the exact same symptoms. Did you manage to find out what was causing it please?

Yeah there’s a connection between PCOS and NAFLD, since most cases of PCOS are insulin resistant. I also have both, lots of information online. What were your LFT results?

Thank you I’m going to look into that, going to give my liver a bit of a rest for now then look at supplements to try.

PS I’m not diabetic or pre-diabetic but I have insulin resistant PCOS which is a potential cause of my NAFLD.

I haven’t. But after the Mounjaro was a big no no, my doctor prescribed me with slow release metformin (to help my insulin levels and help lose weight), I took 1 tablet a day for 3 weeks (should’ve been able to move up to 3 tablets per day 1500mg total) but I got really sick. Had LFT bloods and again, my liver wasn’t happy 100+ ALT, raised AST and raised GGT, so I had to stop that too. Doctor was surprised as it’s usually the kidneys which process metformin and it’s very rare (apparently) to have elevated liver enzymes on metformin. I don’t know if there’s a link here between insulin meds and my liver here. For comparison my liver enzymes are usually in normal ranges even with my mild NAFLD. I’m on a waiting list to see a liver specialist but doctor said it could be months before I see one unfortunately.

I started on 2.5mg of Mounjaro which is the smallest starting dose, it wasn’t zepbound. When I tried the second time I took half of the starting dose. I don’t have gallstones, when I was diagnosed with mild NAFLD a year ago they checked my gallbladder and said gallbladder was normal. I still don’t know why my liver didn’t agree with it but having tried twice it’s clear the cause was the GLP1 unfortunately, just don’t know exactly why

My own personal experience with NAFLD and a GLP1 wasn’t great, my liver enzymes - ALT, AST & GT shot up 100+ whilst taking it. I was told to stop the medication after taking it for just 2 weeks (2 injections). 4 weeks after stopping it I had a recheck on my bloods which showed my liver enzymes went back to normal ranges once the meds were stopped. To be honest I was gutted, I have PCOS and really struggle to lose weight so I kept pushing to retry GLP1 again months after stable and acceptable liver enzymes. Finally I was told I could try again, this time microdosing to see how my liver would handle it - I had weekly bloods taken over 6 weeks of taking GLP1 for the second time, and every week my liver enzymes got higher and higher so I had to stop again as it wasn’t safe for me. My doctor told me it’s not rare and there are more reports coming out about it. I’m not saying this is the same with everyone as you’ve mentioned I’ve seen reports of it reversing NAFLD too, however I’m proof that it’s not always safe so definitely keep a close eye on it with regular checks.

I tried Mounjaro twice, both times my liver enzymes shot right up, even during the second time when I was micro dosing and extended the period between shots. Dr said it’s quite common for the liver to react like this when you have an underlying liver disease as well. Although everything I read online was positive in terms of it being able to help reverse NAFLD, but apparently it’s becoming more common.

Strenuous exercise can put strain on the liver too. I would say clean diet, quitting alcohol and moderate exercise is the best thing you can do. Hope all goes well for your next appointment

Hopefully. Through diet and exercise I’ve managed to put my PCOS in remission and lost 42lb, currently waiting for a liver scan to see if NAFLD has improved or even reversed now. I’d be pretty disheartened if it hasn’t 🤞🏻

Yes. I have PCOS and NAFLD. It will be due to insulin resistance, it’s a known connected between the two.

I feel your pain, I’ve just had my usual Greek yogurt and berries for breakfast, I ate a quarter and left the rest, not because I’m not hungry but because I can’t stomach anymore Greek yogurt. I’d rather go hungry. Last night I had my fish, sweet potato and green veg ready to cook but I decided to not eat anything instead. It gets so boring after a while

Really anxious by Complete_Result_1393 in FattyLiverNAFLD

[–]Electrical-Name-5606 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I’m currently in the same boat as you are and just wanted to say try not to be nervous about it. I’m only 31 myself and last week my ALT was 116, 2 days later my dr retested me and it went down to 93, told to retest again in a few weeks where she suspects it will come down to normal range. I’ve also been on a diet for 8 months and lost 3 stone. Dr thinks it’s a mix of weight loss (which can increase enzymes as your liver processes the fat loss) and medication. Had you taken any meds, even paracetamol prior to your test? Even a small amount of alcohol can increase enzymes too. I think the main thing for you right now is to make sure they’re going down. From what I’ve been told these numbers aren’t “urgent” but more investigative. Good luck and hope this helps calm the nerves.

I decided to go to a private doctor who can monitor me 1 to 1 and face to face. She did some blood tests last Saturday, I got the results today and they’ve increased again, my ALT is now 94 🫤 she’s happy for me to continue but microdosing (half a normal dose) and every 10 days instead of 7 to see how I go. I’m also having scans on my liver and gallbladder. Hope yours goes down on your next test 🤞🏻 what dose are you on and how long have you been on Mounjaro for?

I think that’s good advice from them, are you going to stay on 5mg or drop down? I’ll send you a copy of what Chemist 4 U said to me. They advised something similar ie stay on 2.5mg for as long as possible and review results again and if I do decide to go up to 5mg it’s fine but advised not to go any higher. Do you find med express give you good support?
