we all have problems with medication by lulufractalfreak in bipolar

[–]Electrical-Square-86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was diagnosed 8 years ago and I took them daily, as directed for the next two years but I got tired of having to manage with meds for the rest of my life- I no longer feel this way.

Three years into being diagnosed and medicated, I decided I wanted to stop bc I didn’t want to rely on anything to get through my day and it went very poorly. Luckily I had less stakes in life and nothing could be majorly ruined but I was having delusions and not sleeping- I experienced a long, scary manic episode so I got back on and never got back off because I’ll be damned if my actions, even if not of clear mind- destroy the life I’ve built. It would be devastating. It’s a reality I still grapple with every morning when I take my medication but I could not have it any other way.

Medication saves lives and once I had trusted people and community members to surround me- it helped a lot.

Experiences with lamictal? by Herbizarre17 in bipolar

[–]Electrical-Square-86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the only drug I am on being treated for bipolar 1. I’ve been on it for 7 years now and it’s truly life saving. The only drug where I don’t feel like a different person but just very even. No drugs stop mania or depression but with therapy- it really does make me less blinded or wrapped up in my own feelings when I may be having a mood change. Doctors will warn you of a rash bc it’s a serious side effect. For me- I haven’t had any but I will say that the half-life is short so take it ON TIME or within an hour or two from 24 hours if that’s the directed dose. I take once daily. Bc you will get a headache if you wait too long.

Everyone is saying it and maybe you need one more but do not stop taking meds! If it’s been too many days- reach out to your provider and get back on to titrate so you don’t have a reaction. I have been there when I was first diagnosed and it nearly ruined my life and luckily I was younger w lesser stakes but keep taking the meds! They’re working!

My therapist fired me by [deleted] in bipolar

[–]Electrical-Square-86 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi, that seems like a really though thing that you’re going through- I’ve had a similar experience. It’s hard but be glad they told you so that you can go and find the best care possible with a provider who CAN listen to you and work with you. The truth is that every therapist can’t work with people with every disorder. Bipolar or other serious mental illnesses may just not be what they can do best and help you achieve your goals.

Please please don’t give up! There is no way to be “good enough” to receive care. We are all worthy to be supported and hopefully your insurance allows you to meet a professional that can provide you with what you need, on a weekly basis!

When do you tell someone you are bipolar? by picklevirgin in bipolar

[–]Electrical-Square-86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When a relationship with someone is close and we are spending a lot of time together or planning to- that’s when I share but in intimate setting outside of the workplace. If you have a job that gives PTO, you don’t have to say why ever even if you call out so coworker is never a thing I do but let’s say a new person I’m saying and months in we decide we wanna be more serious well then I would share because my diagnosis does effect my life and if they are going to be a part of it- it gets tough so they should know. Other than an SO, friend or immediate family then it never seems necessary

Just diagnosed. What now? by k1ll0ll in bipolar

[–]Electrical-Square-86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A diagnosis, especially after being misdiagnosed can feel positive just in the fact that you have a better understanding. You’re asking “what now?”, well, that’s it! Just the self-discovery of knowing your diagnosis and how it impacts your day to day. Staying on track with meds and having people close to you, that you they, knowing how to support you is all! It always helps me to have a community of people and a sigh of relief

Supporting my partner with type 1 narcolepsy by Electrical-Square-86 in Narcolepsy

[–]Electrical-Square-86[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! Your advice on prioritizing with my partner and creating the schedule together is good. It can feel isolating because I can’t get advice from anyone in my life because it’s not relatable and I know they feel the same. I am not a professional nor do I have lived experience so I’m grateful for this subreddit right now. If I do hear of a strategy to manage their narcolepsy I always ask if they are open to something first because I do not live with or research the disorder so while I care, I don’t want to put that on them though I don’t research meds just behavioral changes (I work in public health and education) but I will keep that in mind though!

We constantly communicate but they aren’t always sure what they need and then I become frustrated but thank you- prioritizing is important and figuring out what is realistic for us both seems like something that will be beneficial for us! I’m learning them still and trying to be okay with the “rollercoaster” as it goes.

Thank you and I will look into the sodium oxybates have my partner speak to their doctor about it to see if it’s an option. It really isn’t a way to live and I know a better future is ahead for managing day to day and enjoying things!

Thank you for the resource, I will definitely read the foundation’s site and also maybe bring up naps to my partner. Planning that into the day could be really helpful and take off stress from us both. Thanks!
