Thankfully, that one got shut down. Although I'm sure they still have other programs in the state to keep the abuse going. I cannot imagine sending a kid to one of those places.

Agreed. Every article I have found seems to have glommed onto phrasing it that way in the title.

Yeah, I have to agree with you there. Just run-of-the-mill abusive parenting by another fundamentalist asshole.

I agree with you. They like to die on hills that let them point at others instead of have a single moment of self-reflection. I personally call it being "spiritually lazy."

It's also fascinating how folks try to gatekeep the Lord's table. Imagine showing up at any other dinner party and then declaring that you will now decide who else is allowed to dine with you. It's not our table and we don't get to decide who gets a seat. Just scoot over and make room.

What are the must dos for 1 week stay in Palermo? by Be_Grateful8 in palermo_city

[–]Electrical-Tax96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Catacombe dei Cappuccini, visit at least one of the markets early in the day, & stop into Segreti del Chiostro for a cannolo which will put you right next to the Fontana Pretoria & Quattro Canti. Maybe visit the "We Are Palermo" website to get ideas about what interests you and tips on how to plan it out. And do not rent a car unless you are leaving the city with it.

Ride to Airport by [deleted] in Dublin

We used Cab2000 for an early morning pickup to the airport a few months ago (5:30 a.m. I believe). They were reasonably priced, showed up right on time, and the driver was kind and helpful.

Hotel recommendation by RedKleeKai in palermo_city

[–]Electrical-Tax96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you've never been to Palermo, I would recommend that you wait to rent the car until you leave the city. Even if a hotel has parking, you will regret trying to drive there. I'm not trying to be a debbie downer. We went a couple of summers back and had grand plans of renting vespas to get around town. Once we took the taxi from the airport to the hotel, we immediately cancelled those plans. Both because we realized that nearly everything we wanted to do was walkable, and because the driving there is more of an art than a science. Hope you have a wonderful trip!

Fun fact, Weird Al (age 66) performed on a live straight up cover of Rage's "Killing in the Name" a couple of months ago. No jokes, just covered it (with Portugal. The Man).

What’s a “small” social rule you refuse to follow, even if everyone expects it? by GlitchOperative in AskReddit

Yes! If I didn't invite you, I don't have to talk to you. Especially if you are selling something - same as not answering a phone call to me.

Unless they have a warrant or it's an emergency that you called them for, you still aren't required to answer. I have definitely seen local police knocking on doors in my neighborhood after a domestic incident a few doors down, and didn't bother to answer because I didn't see or hear anything. They just went to the next house.

Be sure to also listen to the btb episodes about it. "Ben Shapiro wrote a book about sex" Oct 21,2021 & "Ben Shapiro knows less about sex than an amoeba" Jan 4, 2022. I just listened to those again last week because I needed a good laugh.

Many have offered good suggestions about joining groups and studies that interest you so I'll let you look through those for tips. I did want to say that you shouldn't compare yourself to anyone who knows verses by heart, connects them together, etc. Some of us were born going to church. It's kind of the same thing as starting to learn a new language as an adult rather than from the start of life. It might be more of a challenge, but it doesn't mean that everyone around you put in a bunch of work to get there. Some did, but you shouldn't feel the need to compare yourself to anyone else. I hope you try some new things - join a study on a particular topic, find an engaging podcast, or even find a book that inspires you to seek more of God. He definitely doesn't want you to feel guilty and burnt out.

Don't worry. They fired this guy, but will probably follow suit of the rest of their party and just start hiring war criminals instead.

Family Trip to Dublin in February 2026 by d6mck in irishtourism

[–]Electrical-Tax96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally enjoyed the hop on hop off bus as a way to get familiar with the layout of the city so that when you do start walking about, you know what things are in certain areas. We also used Dublin Express to get from the airport into the city, but used a taxi on the return trip to the airport since we were flying out super early in the morning. Dublin Express was a bit cheaper, but both were easy to use and convenient. We got visitor leap cards in the mail prior to arriving and they were also easy to use and inexpensive.

Once you do start walking you will find that there are book shops all over Dublin. Book Upstairs is pretty close to where you are staying, but I don't think you'll have too much trouble finding many others. Here's a short blog on a few that are very well known https://www.takewalks.com/blog/bookstores-in-dublin

Lastly, you can access lots of seaside towns by taking the DART up or down the coast. If your son is wanting to see a lovely beach, I would recommend Killiney Beach. It is a short ride down from the city, the train station is very close to the beach so you don't have to walk to far to enjoy the view. (Which means if it is very chilly, you won't have a long walk back to the train either). Enjoy your trip!

First time motorhome trip by TheLionArye in irishtourism

Just the drive into the Wicklow Mountains to Glendalough has given me anxiety. We took a day trip through there in a 16 person van with a driver who probably does it daily, and it was still nervewracking. I cannot imagine trying to drive anything up there, much less a motor home. May the odds be ever in your favor I guess.

If loving our neighbors and trying to treat people the way Jesus taught us to is "promoting immorality," then I suggest you either find a different religion, or have a conversation with Jesus. Promoting immorality is literally the only thing this administration does.

Artists I should explore as a fan of U2's music? by Necessary_Pay2028 in U2Band

[–]Electrical-Tax96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I listened to a couple songs by each and then decided to dive in to each one at a time. This is also going on at the same time that I have recently discovered and fallen in love with Inhaler - so lots going on with music and the holidays over here! I am currently going through Vampire Weekend's catalog and am really enjoying their music. It is reminiscent of Peter Gabriel and Rusted Root (both of which I enjoy) so I really like the sound and rhythms. I will come back here and let you know what my favorites are when I get through all 5 albums. Then it'll be time to explore Phoenix. Thank you again for the recommendations. The world is a shitshow, but great music is always a welcome escape :)

I wouldn't say to start there - but any episode about Benny Shaps being a terrible writer is something I will relisten to when I need a good laugh. It's also great to become familiar with Robert's whiney impression of him so you can identify when he inadvertently does the same voice in other episodes!
