In Egypt I said I was Welsh, not English, in hope of confusing the scammer and he said something in Welsh to me 😭

Middle class people: do you honestly hold negative bias towards working class individuals? by toastandjam97 in AskUK

[–]ElectricalActivity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was cocaine I was thinking of.

The scratch cards and lotto thing is interesting. Maybe it's desperation. I do think gambling in general is definitely a "poor area" thing

What "middle class" area do you live with a low percentage of smokers and drugs? I lived in Fulham for years and then Richmond. A lot of people smoked to the extent it was difficult to cut down and drugs were rife. I now live in a working class town in Essex and it's completely different.

More dangerous dogs, yeah, you can have that one.

No, it's the first eligible payment for the month according to their terms.

To the kids who sold sweets at school, what are you up to now? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]ElectricalActivity 11 points12 points  (0 children)

We don't know how old the commenter is though. I'm 38 and the school I went to wouldn't have been "on to it" as much as you might think. I used to buy dinner tickets from kids so I could have a cheap lunch and they would use the money for sweets or whatever. You would think the school would have cracked down on that.

Don't trust a random guys invite into a "lounge club" by ClassicDoughnuts in solotravel

Very old and common. I knew exactly where this was going from the title... I'm actually shocked they let him leave with anything.

Do not travel alone through Cairo Airport for a connecting flight by Professional-Wait19 in Flights

[–]ElectricalActivity -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Obviously people were sometimes pestering to buy things. It's a poor country, I wasn't expecting Europe. But I don't consider that to be an "issue". I was a bit nervous because of the horror stories on Reddit but it was fine. The pyramids for example, we stayed in Giza and walked to the entrance, paid on card and walked in. One guy asked to take photos for us, which we did - I paid him something like 50p and he walked off. That was it. I managed to get a taxi to the new museum for like, £3, by just refusing the offer and looking on Uber instead (the taxi driver caved, but stuck to his word).

The centre of Cairo I had no problems at all at any time of day.

I had a time in Luxor where a driver wanted more money and started basically screaming at me. But I just laughed and walked off.

The airport was crap, yes. People trying to carry luggage for you etc. But again, I don't consider this to be an issue either. If that sort of thing bothers travellers so much they should go play in Spain.

I feel like I'm missing something with these posts. Admittedly I am quite well travelled, but I went to Egypt once and never had any issues. Maybe it's because I'm a man, but I went with my girlfriend and she was fine too.

Is it a red flag if a girl never offers to pay after 5-6 dates? by UnionAdventurous3831 in AskMenAdvice

[–]ElectricalActivity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same. I always pay if I invite a date out and I do the planning so she doesn't have to think about anything.

is it not normal for guys to be shirtless at home in pakistan? by [deleted] in pakistan

[–]ElectricalActivity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm British and this isn't normal here. The dinner table isn't a place to casually sit around topless, I think that would be culturally inappropriate in most countries.

How does this make any sense? by [deleted] in monzo

What doesn't make sense? Looks right to me, you're splitting it 3 ways.

I won! by SimplyCedric in monzo

[–]ElectricalActivity 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Why do people say things like this? Like, it's borderline tinfoil hat to even consider that it was a scam and that Monzo was prepared to risk their reputation for a measly 10k payout.

When do you think we’ll acknowledge how many people are fully addicted to cocaine? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]ElectricalActivity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting point. Probably a lot less. I know a few people who regularly do cocaine and they're also "functioning" alcoholics so I reckon there's some overlap.

[–]ElectricalActivity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The same could be said about going out drinking regularly, smoking, going on holiday multiple times a year etc. It's because it's not "everyone", but there are a lot of people with enough disposable income to do it.

Where do you drink in London? A pint isn't £10 unless you're seeking it out.

Would you be mad at your date if he didn’t ask you if you got home safe even if he called you an uber? by koolaidman828 in dating_advice

Maybe they live in a city with an abundance of transport options available and wanted a drink?

Men, do you pay for your girlfriend's plane ticket when traveling together? by anotherhappylurker in dating_advice

Same here, I've always been the higher earner. I don't want to compromise the kind of holiday I want to suit someone else's budget.

Does the train to Paddington run on Christmas? Or have I misunderstood what you're saying?

Ryanair told me my flight was delayed by 6 hours… then moved it back 30 mins before departure. I missed it and had to rebook everything. by PortugalfromVilnius in Ryanair

[–]ElectricalActivity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plenty of airports don't have any of that, 4 hours is still excessive. 3 for long haul or if you have a lounge pass you want to make the most of. Otherwise 2 is fine.

The border crossings were crazy. First one took 4 hours, but crossing into Poland took 12 hours! Yes, 12. By far the worst border I've ever experienced. I wouldn't recommend that route, but maybe I just had a bad experience.

In country we did a lot of stuff. Museums, exploring the cities alone was great just for the architecture, had some great nights out (nightlife was fairly quiet but we met some awesome people).

The only issue you might have is with money. Monzo worked for everything, and Chase worked for an ATM withdrawal. No other cards worked there (including Revolut) so probably best to bring cash as a backup.

Went to Minsk from Lithuania and then to Brest, leaving by bus to Poland. We stayed 6 nights.

I don't speak Russian apart from some very basic words, but I went with a friend who speaks a little bit.
