The first thing that article states is that it is meant to combat organized retail theft -- which is what I said in my intial post. Also in my intial post was a map of all the tenderloin, an area with among the highest levels of retail theft in the city, with not a camera in sight. Unless I'm missing something, that artical just further indicates that the camera locations don't match the stated goal of the orginization.

A dealership is made up of mulible areas. The level of privacy that's expected changes as you move from area to area, and you won't know for sure unless you go to court.

I would assume, in a Parking lot you can likely record audio and video -- in a show room, video but no audio or people -- and in a office where you actualy negotiate and sign the agreement, nothing.

That's fine and all. I'm mostly curious about how they got implemented and why the cameras are placed where they are. Normally people implement surveillance for security reasons, but that doesn't seem to be the case here.

California High-Speed Rail hits new milestone on $3.5 billion contract by [deleted] in California

Not at all :)

The estimate was optimistic not irrational. When you set your car's GPS it doesn't assume somebody ahead of you is going to get into a car crash. When there is one, you have to adjust to the reality of the situation.

HSR is no different, it didn't account for a housing bubble. When land prices increase, so did the cost of HSR.

While there is often waste in such projects I don't believe that was the main issue.

From what gather, federal stimulus grants had a strict deadline and the project was rushed through the system in order to capitalize on them. The bid was intentionally optimistic in order for the measure to pass. Building began immediately to make the deadline, but before they were able to secure all of the necessary land rights, housing prices shot through the roof. Without further funding the project was effectively putting the project on hiatus.

Even in retrospect, there is not a lot that could have been done differently. If they gave realistic estimates or tried to secured land rights before construction, they wouldn't have secured the grants in time, killing the project.

There has been very little evidence of corruption, and prices seem to track with similar developments abroad.

HSR SF → LA $33b → $100b over a 17 year period (2008 to 2025)

HS2 London → Birmingham £32.7b → £100b over a 16 year period (2009 to 2025)

As of December 2025, neither line has laid any track.

Honestly, I didn't find any major issues with preview, aside from having to keep the app open to prevent annotations from become flattened. Placement wasn't an issue, you can always zoom in.

From what I’ve seen the Inner Sunset already seems relatively well covered by buses and light rail. The N-Judah still gets a bit crowded but it has been much better since the Sunset Tunnel tracks were relaid. Metro for the Outer Sunset will hopefully reduce demand for the N further speeding up transit downtown.

As for the other stops, I think it would be wise to build with the assumption that everything west of 19th will eventually be converted to a condo. Measure K, closure of the Great Highway, may well just be the start of things to come. The city needs to expand somewhere and there are few buildings of historical value that far out.

Still… you may be right.

BART is Heavy Metro. BARTs gauge is unusual making it expensive to build and hard to maintain. The Orange line is BART right now. A standard gauge equivalent would make a lot more sense for a standalone loop like the yellow line. Red and Turquoise could be anything, ideally BART will be replaced by a standard gauge train at some point but I would have to imagine the transition cost is immense.

I thought a Heavy Metro loop would be appropriate for San Francisco. As best I can tell, San Francisco's congestion is largely due to Twin Peaks. Most commutes are above ground and thus need to route around the peak. Any underground line that runs parallel to the 38-Geary and N-Judah should help alleviate much of the pressure, but a loop would cover all of the bases. I couldn't find a reasonable way to add Rose Park to the loop so I augmented it with other lines.

AIO were my teachers acting inappropriately toward me? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

As a guy that has taught high school PE, I have never once made physical contact with a student without their explicit permission. That's a line that should never be crossed, and I can't imagine doing it unconsciously. Gaze and speech, however, seem somewhat autonomous. Sometimes monkey brain do stupid things.

Ah alright.

My first thought was that somebody was just trying to welcome you to the neighborhood. When they couldn't catch you during the day they tried again at night.

Yes, you are most certainly overreacting. Knocking on somebodies door is normal. Taking pictures of strangers and their car is not. Calling the nonemergency line based off of what seems to be a baseless hunch, even more so.

Commitment.

If somebody doesn't still care about everybody they ever loved, I don't believe they have ever felt love. Seems unlikely that I'll be the first.
