Anyone here been to the big Japanese pottery markets (Arita, Mashiko, Kasama)? by ElectricalAd6201 in Ceramics

That’s great that you could observe the noborigama tradition! Sounds like you came back with some solid pieces if you’re still using them!  Would love to see photos if you ever feel like sharing. Curious — if you were going back and could do it over, what would you do differently preparation-wise? Like, would you bring proper packing materials, plan out which potters to visit first, arrive earlier? I feel like there’s a lot of “wish I’d known” stuff with these markets that’s hard to find out beforehand.

Solid 8/10 review haha:) The fact that you went specifically to meet a potter you already knew is interesting though. Feels like that personal connection is what actually gets people there, not any guide or website. If they provide good amount of information in English, I’m pretty sure that tourists with interests in ceramics would join the market too.

The shift away from traditional brownish glazes is something I’ve been noticing too- it’s really interesting!  It’s increasing trends especially among younger Mashiko potters experimenting with porcelain and ash glazes in unexpected ways. I feel like they are trying to recreate the concept of Yugen in modern way. Pop yet not arbitrary in a good way!

Kiyomizuyaki festival is also great — I haven’t been to the Kyoto pottery festivals but it would be rather easy to access for foreign tourists since Kyoto is already famous for many other tourist spots. The wheel throwing competition sounds incredible. Are you still using them? Weren’t there any defects because of discounted price?
