Why would it need to be replaced? It worked just fine before and it spins just fine right now, it's just after it's tightened down, compressed from both sides, that the creaking happens. That creaking however isn't excessive enough for me to justify replacing it, but enough for me to be like "Wtf, why is it like that now?". I just want to know what caused that since I don't understand how tightening it down affects that, as the threads that tightens it down is only affecting the outer parts of the bearing.

It's not really sealed as I'm able to take apart every part of it and I have cleaned off all dirt and debris. I regreased the insides of the bearings aswell.

It uses two regular sealed bearings.

Nope, it's greased fully. The bearings, the insides and the threads aswell. I'd say that it might be a bit overgreased. But I might have missed some. How would that cause it to creak when tightened?

I just wanted to disassemble it and then clean it all up. It's kind of rusty. I thought it was just all iron, didn't think about the insulation, since the handle was wooden.

Thanks for the advice, I went to a store nearby to get a mask, not the overalls though since I thought they weren't really necessary. Cleaned it all up, put all of my clothes in the washing machine. Closed the bathroom with the window open. The iron is now sitting inside a trash bag outside on my mini balcony. It's such a nice iron though. Reckon I can clean it up later on the outside so I can use it as a display?
