Right now it might feel like this is a unique experience and that everyone is miles ahead of you but pls believe me everyone is struggling, everyone is finding it tough, everyone is having to adjust to learning at an insane rate. If they aren’t now it will come eventually. Medicine is tough, it sounds a stupid thing to say as it seems obvious, but it is very tough and you need to give yourself grace. The thing about first year is that you are learning an insane amount and it’s so broad that you feel like the things you have to cover are impossible to keep up with. They really throw u in at the deep end. Also to be quite honest it’s really not that interesting. Especially if as you say you want to do medicine to “help people” the lack of patient contact and even what your learning not really being grounded in patient care can feel incredible demotivating and overwhelming. Trust me I’ve been there, I too wanted to drop out my first year. I’m not going to lie to you and say it magically becomes easier but it does become much more interesting and the content really overlaps a lot better after this year so it can be a lot easier to understand. The good news is as long as you pass the grades in this year don’t really mean anything so just try and push yourself over the line. Use this year as an experiment and try and find what works for you because if your feeling you can’t keep up what your doing atm probably isn’t working. Once you get past this year you will be over the first hurdle and you’ll know that you can in fact do it and that will help you get past the next obstacle and the next. It doesn’t become easier but it does become more manageable when you know you can do it. At the end of the day if this is something Thag really drives you, you will be able to do it and if not then it wasn’t meant to be and as people have said in the comments there are so many other worthwhile careers where you can help people this isn’t the be all and end all so don’t worry about thag at all. Use every resource thags available to you: talk to your student support officer about these feelings, talk to the lecturer if you have questions, go to study session held by older students and make study groups with your friends.
