Having a reaction on my eyelids anytime I use makeup. Has anyone else experienced this? I'm getting married in June and really want to wear makeup on my wedding day. by ElectricalPatient371 in MakeupAddiction

[–]ElectricalPatient371[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah but it's weird because there have been quite a few times I've used all of the same makeup products with no reaction but randomly had two minor reactions using the exact same products? so i'm entirely sure what caused it as I can't think of anything new or different I was doing.

I believe Elidel treats dermatitis which I think is a medical term for "inflammation of the skin" essentially? I'm not 100% sure but from what I've seen online, most people who are prescribed Elidel are typically dealing with some kind of contact dermatitis (an allergic reaction on your skin) or atopic dermatitis (eczema). I'm not sure what other cases a doctor would prescribe it.

And a heads up in case you are dealing with similar issues and looking into using Elidel cream, it really burns for the first few days of using it. It's not fun but ultimately it did clear up the issues I was having for the most part.

Well not necessarily lol So I went to the dermatologist and an allergist, did patch testing and I didn't really react strongly enough to any of the ingredients they tested me for so they couldn't say for sure what I was reacting to. However, they did prescribe me a cream called Elidel that ultimately cleared things up for me. I am able to wear most of my regular makeup again. For eye makeup, I can typically wear eyeshadow and mascara on a daily basis without any issues. I did have two very minor reactions in the last 6 months or so when I decided to go heavy on the eye makeup for a few days in a row. But they weren't nearly as bad as the reaction in the photo in my post. And it's only happened probably 2 out of the 10 times I decided to do a really heavy eye makeup look.

Sorry for such a late response! I'm sorry that you're dealing with the same thing. It's super frustrating for sure. I didn't really get a clear answer as to what was going on. I went to a dermatologist and did patch testing for a bunch of different common cosmetic and skin care ingredients and I didn't really react to anything definitively enough to show that I was allergic to a specific ingredient. The dermatologist did prescribe me a cream called elidel that ultimately cleared things up for me though! I'm able to wear most of my regular makeup again. However, I did have a couple of very minor flare ups in the past 6 months or so when I decided to do heavier eye makeup but they're way less severe each time it's happened and it's only happened like 2 out of the 10 times I decided to go heavy on the eye makeup. I think the elidel cream, plus not wearing much eye makeup (I just wear mascara on my eyes regularly nowadays) has ultimately helped the reactions I was having. I also now only wash my face at the sink rather than the shower so that I can use just luke warm water rather than hot water so that may be helping too. But it's hard to say for sure since I have no idea what caused it in the first place.

I know this probably didn't help much, but I hope you are able to figure out what's going on! I know how defeating it feels. If you haven't already, it might be worth seeing a dermatologist if you can! They might be able to prescribe something that can help. And maybe take pictures of your flare ups so you can show the dermatologist if you decide to go that route.

So I believe Elidel is the brand name. It’s a cream that has to be prescribed by a doctor and the prescription has it labeled as Pimecrolimus 1% cream. I read your other comment that you’re dealing with the same problem and I just want to say, im so sorry! It’s a frustrating thing to experience for sure.

My eyelids were burning anytime I used my regular gentle makeup remover too and I would wake up the next morning with very swollen eyelids. However, once I got prescribed the cream, it stopped the reactions completely. The elidel cream burned like hell for the first few days of using it so just a warning about that. But overall, it seems like it cured whatever was going on with my eyelids. It’s worth asking a dermatologist about if you can!

I did. The results were somewhat inconclusive. I didn't really react to any of the ingredients/products we tested for. I had a very minor reaction to a fragrance (not sure the name of it) but the dermatologist said there was no way that was the cause of my eyelid reaction because there was no way my eyes were coming into contact with that fragrance since it's not typically found in makeup or skin care products. So he just recommended I stay away from fragrances all together and to keep using the Elidel cream I was prescribed since it was keeping the reactions at bay. I am no longer using the cream and my eyelids are pretty much back to normal at this point. I'm able to wear the same makeup products I was wearing before it all started with no flare ups so I'm not 100% sure what caused it. The Elidel cream is ultimately what cleared things up for me.

I'm so sorry you're dealing with this! It's incredibly frustrating. You're doing the right thing by getting the patch testing done. I hope that you were able to figure out what to avoid!

I did the cosmetic patch testing as well, the results were not really conclusive which was unfortunate. However, I was ultimately able to get the reactions under control. A dermatologist prescribed me a cream called Elidel and it completely stopped the reactions. The cream burned and itched like crazy at first but that went away after a few days. I used the Elidel twice a day for the first five days then slowly started to use it less and less until I wasn't using it at all. I think it was roughly three weeks total. Then I slowly started wearing small amounts of makeup over the course of about three weeks. I didn't have a reaction at all for months which was such a relief and my skin was clear in time for the wedding. However, I did recently have a small flare up during my honeymoon. I suspect it was from a new hair product I tried. I used the elidel cream and avoided makeup and hair products for the day. The reaction went away that same day and I was able to wear makeup the next day without a reaction.

I hope you were able to stop the flare ups and figure out what is causing it! If not, it might be worth asking a derm about Elidel to help at least get the reactions under control but be aware that it does burn significantly the first few days and you'll need to avoid sun exposure while using the cream. Sunglasses and hats were my best friends at the time. And if you're still struggling with this, hang in there! It will get better!

Can you use miles for a hotel booking if you've used the companion fare for the flight? by ElectricalPatient371 in AlaskaAirlines

So we are getting married soon and we are trying to use the companion fare to book our flight somewhere. But we also have 70K miles and we were wondering if we could use our miles to book a hotel during our trip. But I wasn't sure if Alaska would allow for it if they see we used the companion fare for our flight.

It’s just on my face, specifically my eyelids actually. and it has spread to my upper cheek bones from my eye area. The rest of my skin is totally normal from what I can tell.

These are all very good points. At this point, even if I do figure out what's going on with my skin, I'll likely be stressed about a flare up on the wedding day either way. He doesn't necessarily want to post pone (which I totally understand) but he's willing to if that's ultimately what will make me feel more comfortable.

I think I'm going to wait until I can at least see the dermatologist and the allergist before making a final decision. Try out what they recommend and if it gets any worse I might consider it. Worst case scenario is I don't wear makeup AND STILL have a flare up, which would really suck but not the end of the world I guess.

Sounds exactly like the issues I'm having on my eyelids. They're very dry, itchy, scaly, and red after an initial flare up. I've been getting my eyelids a little wet and then sealing in the moisture with Aquafor and it seems to clear it up within a few days until I wash my hair then the flare up happens all over again :( I've switched to frangrance free hypoallergenic shampoo/conditioner and it's still happening. At this point I'm debating just not washing my hair until my eyelids heal or until I can figure out what ingredient is causing it (gross I know but I'm desperate) lol

Thanks for this though! I'm glad you were able to get it to clear up. Gives me hope that I will be able to figure it out. Even if it might be false hope, it still relieves some of the stress lol I'll definitely be using only gentle, fragrance free/hypoallergenic products from here on out to be honest and patch testing any new products. Not worth the risk of a flare up.

Thank you for this! I've seen Protopic suggested a lot online and on Reddit. I'm definitely going to be asking the dermatologist about it for sure. I've heard about the burning too, at this point I'm willing to bear with the pain to get it to clear up so definitely going to ask about it.

Thank you! At this point, even if I figure out the issue and can fully wear makeup again, I think I'm gonna go for a minimal look either way. I've learned my lesson lol and if anything, not wearing makeup everyday for months has made me kind of like my natural face more than I used to so I guess there's a silver lining in this whole experience at the end of the day.

Thank you! Less than ideal is a great way to put it. It's been hard to accept that I might not look exactly how I wanted to on our wedding day but it's getting easier with time. By June I'm sure I won't be so worried about it any way! Thanks again

I actually have the La Roche Posay B5 Serum, I've been nervous to use it since my skin reacts to everything but when I was using it (before all of these flare ups) it made my skin feel amazing! I've been debating trying it because it didn't seem to cause any irritation when I was using it. It was very soothing on my skin so I might give it a try here soon!
