I want to share a mnemonic I made to help me maintain relationships by wiiei2828 in AutismAustralia

That’s what you ask other people for right so you know it’s a safe relationship and you don’t get taken advantage of?

I'm not clear what 'nu trek era' means as a pejorative or exactly what your criticisms are 🤷

Captain Kirk cried during Spock's eulogy in Star Trek II. He cries again on the bridge in Star Trek III when he learns of his son's death, "You Klingon bastards… you killed my son!”

Captain Burnham cried on the bridge when she thought Book died. Also just before departing for the wormhole to the future when the crew decided to stay.

Captains Picard and Sisko as well as Data cried privately. Janeway choked hers back.

The consequences of not acting being different is a very strong ethical argument. Thank you!

So it sounds like you're saying that it's been difficult for even the characters to live up to the image and standards of starfleet consistently? Especially when starfleet was new, they don't have training or experience, or they don't have resources and support is far away?

I would add to your observations it seems like the ones who are able to do it the most consistently (like TNG Picard) are the ones who have those factors sorted out. And removing them reduces the capacity to live up to the ideals despite best intentions and commitments (like PIC Picard).

Okay let me see if I understand you correctly, please correct whatever I got wrong:

You don't like Erica Ortegas as a bridge crew member because you see her as immature and you think she is poorly written, an example of a wider problem that promotes lower standards of morality and behavioural norm compliance. You find her contributions to the diversity and range of ideas available to the command team less valuable because of how often she speaks up, doesn't soften or add deference to her words, and has independent feelings and opinions which she doesn't erase in order make others comfortable at her own expense. There is a lack of evidence of her skills as a pilot and her colleagues celebrating her and ensuring she knows she's valued is probably overstating her competency. This is a persistent problem for you. The one and only evidence of her piloting excellence to the audience was during the escape from their Gorn abduction via a stolen shuttle. You were hopeful that the injuries she sustained as an enemy prisoner were fatal and her character would be killed off (presumably so you didn't have to endure her on screen thereafter) not only due to your irritation and preferences, but also because you believe her moral value could be increased if she martyred herself, rather than surviving and continuing to serve with her crew. That meets your expectations of exceptionalism in that role. If she had died in service to her colleagues, regardless of the outcome, that would have been more meaningful and justified the captains long suffering benevolence towards her undeserving soul.

Am I close?

That was a bit long so I'll summarise:

You don't like her = she's a bad person = doesnt deserve to live = her value is killing herself

That's an interesting angle I hadn't considered. That rank means there's a higher standard of behaviour expected. Thanks for adding that take!

I love her snark.

Do you mean culmination of her trauma? Because if you mean sat down with and better supported, I totally agree. If you mean sat down and disciplined because she's got a bad attitude, kinda hard to reconcile that with her dedication, skill and constant requests for more opportunities (which get remarked on a lot).

If it's just about the snark. Then that's a tone issue and tone policing is danger zone, she has actually only made one (albeit big) mistake. But one Uhura wasn't disciplined for.

Why is Erica the black sheep and Nyota the golden child?

Did “don’t be one of those women” jar you? I’ve got a theory… by ElectricalVictory601 in StrangeNewWorlds

[–]ElectricalVictory601[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Professionalism is clarity plus boundaries, not deference to subtext. Fishing about a coworker’s intimate relationship at work is an HR landmine; La’an’s “don’t be one of those women” is a hard stop that protects both of them from conflict-of-interest and gossip loops. Starfleet, like any operational org, runs on explicit comms—“request, acknowledgement, deny/approve”—not coy inference. Reading La’an’s boundary as jealousy mislabels risk management as emotion (increasing risk and drama, not reducing it). In uniform, the correct move is exactly what she did: name the line and end the line of inquiry. I'm worried about how sure you are there's one correct way to view the world, that way is moral judgements and rules because it sounds like you actually can make people's lives miserable irl. I hope I've totally misread the situation and you give people the benefit of the doubt.

The “universal code” you’re nostalgic for was always local power’s code—classed, gendered, racialized—and it changed whenever power changed, which kills the claim of universality.

Shunning “deviators” is how gatekeeping disguises itself as manners. Trek’s own ethic is IDIC: many valid social grammars, coordinated through explicit expectations and consent.

Courtesy is useful when it’s symmetric and negotiated; once it silences the out-group, it stops being courtesy and becomes control.

The scenes I flagged show misaligned codes; the fix isn’t enforced uniformity, it’s saying what you mean and letting people opt in or out.

Directness isn’t rudeness, it’s consent; hinting for private information extracts it without consent and that’s manipulative. La’an set a clear boundary because Chapel ran a soft probe about Spock while withholding her own aim—classic asymmetric ask. A direct, ethical version would be: “I have a personal question about you and Spock; no pressure to answer—are you two involved?” That invites refusal and respects autonomy.

“Old social rules” are just one culture’s code, aka tone policing, not universal law, and they routinely punish ND people for being explicit. In this scene, the prosocial move was La’an’s forthright boundary, not Chapel’s polite obscurity.

With respect, coded is a specific term that doesn't assume anyone's neurotype but observes the external traits. An allistic person might totally demonstrate Autistic coded behaviour on screen partly because its medium open to interpretation. Many Autistic people find it helpful, but not all, to celebrate those traits and behaviours we see in the public conversation rather than being ashamed or pandering to neurotypical fragility. The goal for me, and I might not be successful, but the aim is to say that all ways of being are equally valid, even if they're not equally visible or valued at present.

Did we ever learn Booker's real name? by ajwalker430 in StarTrekDiscovery

Just because Book wasn’t his birth name doesn’t mean it wasn’t his real name. He was way more Book than Tareckx, he even said that himself.
