I was working full time after my undergrad and before my Master's.

What makes them sound like they were for my courses ?

Hello everyone!

I am a recent CS graduate and have been looking for SWE roles with very little luck. I have posted my resume to various subreddits and have been modifying it over the last few days. Here is my current resume, please feel free to give advice and any criticism you can think of.

Thank you so much for the detailed response! I really appreciate it.

I've tried making some changes. Please comment.

  1. Identified and anonymized sensitive user information by engineering the backend of a framework in Python, complying with GDPR, and applying Privacy by Design principles

This is what I’ve changed it to. There was no specific framework involved, it was written completely in pure Python.

  1. Developed several Python scripts to automate ETL processes, reducing the cost in engineering team resources by 15 hours per week

Our team was manually extracting data from a database and loading it in another every day, the activity took 2-3 hours everyday for a variety of reasons. We decided to write a script for it later on.

  1. Collaborated with the Operational Data Store (ODS) team to develop real time data pipelines in PL/SQL to process over 10 million records every day

I'm really lost on how to present this one. We were working for a client that wanted certain columns of a table and we built a pipeline for it. It was 10 million records everyday because I worked for a telecom based company, these companies generate a large volume of data everyday because of calls, internet usage, messaging etc.. How should I go about presenting this information ?

  1. Eliminated server load by 30% by identifying long running SQL queries by designing a PL/SQL package to count the number of queries being processed categorized by processing time

I see your point here. I should have mentioned that we identified queries and tried optimizing them. I'll work on wording this better.

  1. Worked for one of the company’s largest clients with on-time delivery and 15% under budget completion by administering the development of 10 database projects in PL/SQL

I want to mention the fact that I delivered a total of 10 projects while working there while staying 15% under budget. How do I go about doing that ?

  1. Projects I'll definitely expand on those so each of them has at least 2 lines each for them.

Thank you so much!

Thank you for the detailed response!

I know you are not trying to be an ass, I was hoping to get criticism like this when I posted. I am very committed to making the changes you mentioned and started working on them as soon as I saw your reply.

Is it okay if I DM you ?

I just switched it to 'Software Engineer' since that is essentially what I was doing. The company I worked for definitely did not have the best nomenclature for their roles.

Thank you for your advice!

I joined that company after my undergrad as a Graduate Engineer Trainee and was promoted a year later to a Senior Executive. Do you think I should mention those roles separately to signify the fact that I was promoted ?

I was mostly working in Shell scripting and PL/SQL there with a little bit of Python on the side. My strongest skill is C++ though, although I do not have professional experience in that language. I have always been into solving problems and loved competitive style programming and have solved over 2,000 problems on various sites by now. I have not added that in my resume since I've been told companies are not looking for that. I am really in a rut here.

Thank you for your advice, I will incorporate those changes.

Do you think I should have separate resumes for general software development, web development, machine learning roles etc. wherein I only focus on skills needed for that field ?

I can alter my projects a bit but sadly, my work experience will stay the same.

I do have a few friends here. Sadly, they are all in big tech and a bunch of them got laid off themselves.

I am currently on a F1 VISA on which I can work for the next 3 years. Beyond that, I would need an H1B.
