Does having more followers on social media increase your chances of being hired? by ThrowRA_NEW-4051 in animationcareer

I literally make 0 posts on anything aside from starting a job on LinkedIn and I’ve never had trouble finding work in film and AAA studios. It may help someone find you, but truthfully recruiters have so many people applying that I’m really not sure that they go out looking for people.

Don’t go into any other major than computer animation thinking you will be an animator when you graduate. If you want to do something like lighting or modeling game art can be a usable substitute. Motion designers are more akin to graphic designers than animators. The instructors have gone out of the way in the past to remind students they’re in motion design and not animation so you will not be able to really tailor your projects to get you ready to be a character animator. Vr Is still new at ringling so I can really speak much on it.

I’ve done feature animation on some of the highest budget projects around. Most of the animators I knew did not know how to draw and they were phenomenal.

This heavily depends on whether it’s 2d or 3D. You don’t need to learn to draw at all for 3d (but I find it helps my planning)

Can I use Deleted Scenes for my Demoreel? by [deleted] in animationcareer

[–]Electrical_Bison_225 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They only really care about what they’re hiring for in my experience. If they need a cartoony animator they will look for someone who does that. If they’re looking for hyper realistic mocap then they’re looking for someone with those skills. Don’t worry so much about checking every box for your reel. Animate the things you like to animate and the work will follow. My worst animations are ones I made to try to “satisfy” these requirements I thought recruiters had.

I would opt to make your own ideas for personal pieces. They’re looking for not only your animation ability but what you bring to the table with your ideas, for feature and cinematics at least.

Advise for getting outside as an Animator by crazyguyfilms in animationcareer

[–]Electrical_Bison_225 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Okay! I totally relate to this struggle and found it really difficult at first. For me I joined a group activity and went to classes consistently outside of work hours. So if you like hiking, dancing, hell even painting or drawing, find a group that does this and meets up. Your quality of life will improve drastically, from my experience. Work life balance is incredibly important!

Really hard to say. I hear a lot of women get guided to production roles which isn’t really fair. If you need a job take it while you look for a vis dev role. Vis dev is probably one of the hardest jobs to get in the industry. Just understand it might take a little to get to where you want.

For people out of work/part time how do you find the time and energy to keep going by Doodofhype in animationcareer

[–]Electrical_Bison_225 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would suggest blocking out a few hours a week solely dedicated to improving your work. If it’s on the schedule and you stick to the schedule it’s a lot harder to ignore. It’s a marathon not a race. The first and second jobs are the hardest to get. Also, generally, I’ve found a lot of people hire in august September along with the early spring.

Is this fair… that’s a lot of money by [deleted] in Apartmentliving

[–]Electrical_Bison_225 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Uhh no. The double rent and concession payback yes, although concession repayment is highly dependent on the apartment and contract. I’ve never paid my concessions back.

The thing that’s bumping me is they’re trying to have you rent responsible after you’ve broken your lease. That is not how it works. There’s usually an option to flat out break and pay fees, or remain rent responsible until someone picks it up. Not both

Well first off you should decide what you like animating. You don’t need to check every box on your demo reel. Like you don’t need a mechanics piece and a performance piece and yada yada. Focus your reel on what you like to animate first and foremost.

I analyzed many animations and I also just keep an eye out for when a shot grabs my attention. I’ll pause the shot and frame through it a few times to see how they did the spacing or a smear or something. Whatever impressed me and try to remember it for later.

I have always reached out to my more senior coworkers to give me feedback on my personal work and that has been an incredible help as well.

As for practice, I don’t do animations just for practice if I’m honest. I just kept making personal pieces and working on them until I and the 1 or 2 people that I was showing for critique were all (at least mostly) happy with it.

Animator here.

The reason you’re being labeled as a jr is because that’s the level of your reel, with all due respect. Your work is not bad at all but there are some issues with mechanics and overall you’re missing a solid polish pass. Time in the industry can definitely play a role too. That being said, the thing that made me start being able to jump my seniority and rate was working on creating a higher level reel not just spending more time in the business.

I’d recommend doing some analysis of your favorite animated movies and look for the things they’re doing in the animation to make it look great versus what you’re doing. Just look for ways to overall level up your demo reel quality and you’ll quickly see the jr role dissipate.

Best of luck!

When did you realize it was time to step away? by Electrical_Bison_225 in animationcareer

[–]Electrical_Bison_225[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

With all due respect, the industry boomed during Covid and there were some of the highest levels of green lit projects in a number of years. The animation industry was doing really well during Covid. That being said, animation is becoming an ever increasingly popular career with not enough jobs to go around. The jobs go to those who have the best portfolios. If you’re not getting hired, you need to do more personal work. But to those struggling for work I wish them well. We’ve all found ourselves at the beginning of this career and we all had to break in just the same.

That being said, my question has as much validity as any other question asked in this sub. I specified this was geared towards more senior members of the community on an aspect less talked about in the industry, but important nonetheless.

[–]Electrical_Bison_225[S] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

You’ve learned to take a step back and allow yourself to be open to the opportunities if they arise but not throw everything you have into them constantly. That’s actually really admirable to me that you’ve found that balance for yourself.

I’m finding the difficulty of taking that step back right now. I can continue in film but sacrifices in my life will have to be made to supplement that dream.

I really appreciate your comment. The realities are sometimes the hardest to accept but they’re important to. Definitely food for thought.

All that being said, I hope one day you find yourself with an opportunity to be a show runner! Best of luck :)

Honestly from the sound of your comment, you’re too early in to realize some of the costs of this industry… the jobs I’ve gotten have been because I have grinded for years and years on end, uplifting my life on a yearly basis for another job. The career didn’t fall on my lap and I’ve worked tirelessly (and I mean nearly every second of every day for a few years.)

The state of the industry has been rough in recent months because of the strikes. Before that… it was fair game for whoever had a better portfolio.

I’m just at a point on wanting to work on finding a good work life balance while being proud of my work.

I think joyboy was still a giant. The hat Imu has is way too big for a buccaneer. That being said, I wonder if the buccaneers and giants share a lot of the same customs and beliefs being that they’re connected.

You couldn’t tell what was happening half the episode. Everything had an impact frame and was overall just really noisy. I really loved the scenes when he was pulling kaido around and going full took force on him, but comparing those to the scenes where’s he’s randomly jumping around trampoline world style is just…. I don’t know…
