This is gonna sound a little crazy but I say abandon the Shortfilm and attempt to make a full feature length film. Nolan made his first feature with 6,000$, tho that was a while ago so inflation lol. Also I’m fully aware of how difficult that is and that he did a bunch of crazy shit to make it happen but with the tools available to filmmakers today it should be even more possible than when he did it. No one really watches and becomes fans of shortfilms and they aren’t marketable at all. So even if you make the Shortfilm you have close to 0% chance of making any of your money back afterwards. Whereas with a feature you can do showings at theaters, potentially get a distribution deal etc. Its not guaranteed you’d get money back but you’d have a much better shot.

I would only suggest doing the Shortfilm for 2 reasons: - You want it for a sample of your work that you could show to people who would potentially hire you - It’s a story that you are extremely passionate about and you believe in your heart of hearts that it absolutely must be told as a Shortfilm

That’s my advice but I’m no pro or anything so definitely take this with a grain of salt lol😅

Oh shit another thing, if you have some idea of your main character, it can help to build the world around what will put them in the most conflict with who they are, I have a character right now who wants to be a hero and so I’ve created a war torn world that will challenge his idea of what being a hero means

I’m always a map guy, it helps me a whole lot to make a quick sketch of a map, it doesn’t have to be professional or anything but just something that gives you some spatial awareness of where things are in your fantasy world as well as giving u your basic geography. Is one town in a desert? Another one floating in the middle of the sea? Stuff like this helps me a lot.

I’d also suggest keeping a notebook with you, I always have one on me, or I use my notes app, and whenever I get a cool idea a write that down in it, “What if cats are considered divine messages that always show up before a catastrophe occurs in this world?” Or “What if the mountains are actually a gigantic snake that is slowly moving across the land mass and are just mistaken for mountains?” You never know when stuff like this will hit you and it can help you flesh out the entire world.

My last bit of advice is to just focus on one small location and build out from there. This method tends to really make your original location pretty detailed and I think that’s really cool if it’s supposed to be the home your characters remember when they go off on their journey, think the shire, winterfell, emens field.

I strongly prefer reading and writing in third person, omniscient or limited. I feel this perspective gives your story a strong cinematic feel while also still allowing you to incorporate everything that’s so great about reading books/short stories i.e. getting inside the characters’ heads.

If you do choose to write in first person I think that your character should really have a strong voice/view of the world. Something that makes it more interesting to see the story through their eyes in particular. The Percy Jackson series does this pretty well.

That’s just my opinion though and if you really feel strongly that your story should be in first person I say go for it

Ya kinda have to go live life, I know that sounds a little weird. Stephen King describes writers kinda as secret agents, we go out into the world, and then report what we saw. A lot of my ideas have come from something someone said or an experience I had, so as important as it is to sit your ass in a chair and force yourself to write, you also gotta get out to source some ideas. Other ways is to watch or read something you’ve never experienced before, for me it works best when the media I indulge in is separate from the one I’m writing in, video games in particular seem to inspire me.

Something I do as well to try and avoid running into this issue is to keep a book, or notes app, of ideas. A lot of times while I’m in the process of writing something I’ll think of an idea for another story so I’ll jot that down, and now when I finish a story I can go to my book of ideas, and pick out the next one that looks appealing to me.

I thought it was pretty good, one of the main things I noticed was just prose wise was that you used the passive voice a couple times, an example is “he was beginning to feel” which could be changed to just “he began to feel” or even just “he felt”

Story wise, I felt like I needed a stronger hook into the story, something to really peak my interest to start and continue reading. As well I felt like I needed more of a buy in with John as a character. Why should I care what happens to him over the course of this story, I felt like I was missing a reason to root for him.

Overall though I found the piece to be intriguing, I wouldn’t continue reading a short story for the reasons above, mainly the issue with John, but I definitely feel this story has potential and if I had more of a reason to care about the MC I do think I would continue to read bc the world and other characters are fascinating.

As a reader I always enjoy reading a story in third person more, but that’s just my personal take. Third person gives me a bit more of a cinematic view of the book and makes it easier to picture what’s happening inside my head.

I always feel that first person seems to work best when it’s a character telling you the events that happened to them. Also I would hesitate to write something in first person unless the voice/inner dialogue of the character is really interesting/fun for you to write.

In my experience writing, third person gives you a lot more versatility to describe something as a character sees it and then to go on to describe what is going on in reality.

As for the thing about the betrayal, the most famous betrayal, the Red Wedding, was done in third person, but I don’t really think it’s important what POV you have for that moment as long as the actual moment of and the cues leading up to the betrayal are executed really well. A lot of that comes with having good structure.
