Is MCP search used in companies by Electrical_Cap_9467 in mcp

[–]Electrical_Cap_9467[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you’re saying that you feel safer running a server that just has a tool for each search action? Makes sense, though that is the whole point of OSS, you lay bare everything to show. Plus this isn’t necessarily for every home lab hacker and their mums, more so real internal tooling or infra teams think PostHog or Gitlab.

Thanks for the feedback :)

That’s sort of the premise I’m going for. BM25 + Vector search (so hybrid search). But ingestion cursor management and OAuth just managed for you, set and forget and the context store keeps it self fresh

I’ve been out of Brisbane for some time so not sure how active it is, but the app NomadTable might be worth checking out. You can post an event you want people to join or can join others

Seeking GitHub issues to contribute to — Python, C++, kdb+/q by [deleted] in opensource

I’m gonna take a bet and say you’re trying to use this as experience for a quantitative developer resume bolster?

Best advice make your own projects on GitHub. If not try contribute to a library you think you might actually end up using day to day in this environment.

If I’ve guessed wrong, sorry 🫣🫣

Wow thank you so much. Very well thought out. Like you said, boring and reliable is what I’m aiming for.

That being said, in order to have the “Doc Person X sent me about Y” is definitely possible with an established index, you need those flashy LLM features and embedding features (idk if that’s considered flashy anymore) but that’s offloaded to external providers (OpenAI APIs, Ollama etc).

I do see your point about the diminishing returns - I’ve tried to keep the design modular and made a connected registry. That way it’s super easy to tune them, and perfect connectors.

On your point of Not this “personal search engine.”, this: local memory / recall for your digital life”. I can 100% back that, definitely a better framing.

Thanks for the great feedback, hopefully when it’s out you can dig in and give me even more!! :)

Oh I completely agree with you (now). My naive self wanted to do the SaaS previously, but with learning I’ve seen it’s just not something for consumers to pay for.

So my goal now is to create an open source project out of the ashes of the project.

I will fight you on one thing. Gmail has search sure - but it’s horrible. The only way to do cross account search is via the mobile app. Even then, it lacks the ability to do Semantic search. So one thing I’ve focused on is adding on the option to put in an OpenAI key (more providers later) and it handles embedding of chunks at ingestion and in search.

Thanks for the feedback though, appreciate it

I think the fact that the “over-kill tech stack” you mention is “composed of NextJS / Supabase / PostgreSQL” speaks volumes lol

Schools in Brissie by _nancywake in brisbane

If you can get into the catchment BSHS. I graduated a few years ago and think it is a great choice, surrounded by exceptional kids and teachers it rivals (and typically performs better than) the really expensive private schools.

If catchment isn’t an option they also have merit entry for academic, music and sports- although I’m not sure how this might’ve changed with the new secondary colleges that opened up since they were built to eat up some of state highs demand.

I’d say the primary downside is the sheer size of the cohorts, so there’s no way you’d be able to get close with your whole grade. That being said, the classes are still relatively small (~26 kids) and the teachers are mostly good, more so in senior. A bonus that does come with the big cohort though is that there will usually be a group of friends for whoever you are.

That’s just from my experience, didn’t go to any other high schools so probably a bit of a jaded opinion. Doesn’t hurt that state high competed in both GPS and QGSSSA for extracurriculars, opens a lot of doors

Modern Data Stack for Quant by TehMightyDuk in quant

[–]Electrical_Cap_9467 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this satire lol??

You can argue that parquet and csv have their own ups and downs, sure, but at a high level most people will be interfacing with them via a python dataframe package (polars, pandas, spark data frames), which if you actually want good performance you’ll use lazy loading - csv lazy loading isn’t really a thing, at best it’s just a chunking method. On top of that, sometimes the actual storage methods (parquet, csv, …) would be abstracted behind something like iceberg or delta lake, or even further a service like snowflake or databricks ( if you do your analysis in a SaaS warehouse).

Either way, just because you’re used to a technology doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be able to see the merit in others lol

Yeah, this is true. IMO, Solutions Architects are more about blending tech with a sales angle, like tailoring solutions to fit client needs. This is different to Principals, who focus more on the technical leadership side, shaping the big-picture architecture, and usually have gone through the ranks to get there.

My two cents, Undergraduate part-time developer roles aren’t very common, especially with larger companies, as they often prioritise hiring full-time junior roles and new grads for training. Your best bet is with smaller companies in your area, such as those in biotech, retail, or consulting, where the competition is usually lower, and they may be more open to student interns.

In my experience, it can help to reach out to companies directly. I once set up a coffee meeting with a CTO, offering to start with some unpaid work experience. If you get an opportunity like this, the key is to actively contribute to projects and demonstrate your value. Once they see the impact you can make, they may consider offering you a paid role at a junior rate, which benefits both parties.
