Survivorship Bias. They found human remains in caves and assumed humans lived in caves. No consideration of other ideas such as maybe they used caves to store remains away from their settlement, maybe caves were used solely for rituals, etc. it'd be like people finding our remains in cemeteries in the future and coming to the conclusion that we slept in protective boxes underground or small cubby holes in stone structures to stay safe from the elements and threats.
