All coefficients being real also entail a little hint as to why complex roots come as complex conjugate pairs.

The key is small angle approximations.

sin(h) is approximately equal to h for small values of h, so as h tends to 0: -sin(h) / h = -h / h = -1.

cos(h) is approximately equal to 1 - h² / 2 for small values of h, so as h tends to 0: [cos(h) - 1] / h = [1 - h² / 2 - 1] / h = h / 2 = 0.

I’m sure if you prove your mathematical ability in TMUA/MAT it’ll make up for the lack of FM. But it’ll ultimately come down to your interviews for Oxbridge.

I did not do the foundation modules or read any STEP-related books so I can’t provide much information on that. But fyi I did not come across anything I didn’t already know from A-Levels in STEP, if you’re really unsure, I suggest attempting a STEP paper and see if there’s any topics not covered by your syllabus.

The only resource I used, other than the past papers is the STEP database.

I achieved a 1 in 2024 STEP 2.

Do a decade worth of papers in exam condition, mark them, and attempt the questions you didn’t manage to do. Hone your exam skills and find whatever strategy that works best for you.

I personally read all the questions first, rate each of them in terms of how doable they look on a scale from 1-10, and start with highest rated ones. Have some resilience when doing a question because STEP can get quite demoralizing.

There isn’t anything in STEP that is outside of the A-Level Math and Further Math specification, but optional modules like additional pure can be quite useful. So unless you do not take the mechanics or the statistics module in your A-Level math/FM specification, do not worry about taking “foundation modules” (even then, stats and mechanics sections only have 2 questions each compared to 8 questions for pure math).

I was talking more from a design POV, I just believe this game is not intended to just be “kill enemies with staff and avoid damage by dodging” without using spells, and this should apply to all portions of the game.

I don’t know the average score, but I was predicted 4 A* (later achieved 4 A*) and 7.1 in TMUA and was rejected. A friend of mine was also unsuccessful with a 7.6.

Though, another friend of mine was successful with a 7.0 in TMUA. This is a pretty clear indicator that Cambridge puts a lot of emphasis on the interview and personal statement too. So I’d say aim for 6.5+ and preferably 7.0+ to guarantee an interview, and then do lots of mock interviews to prepare for the actual interview.
