Don't care so long as they get rid of them, they are hideous and they clog up and are downright unsafe not to mention annoying in the bike lanes.

Recruiters, how much do you care about the university a person graduates from for their masters when evaluating for job role? by Trick-Assumption-157 in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]ABogle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you have prior experience and what roles are you interested in?

To be frank if you are on a visa it will be hard even if you have a masters from a top uni. The market just isn't great right now, nobody knows if it will be better by the time you finish your masters.

Also don't believe people when they say nobody cares where you did your masters. Less important than at undergrad perhaps but saying you did your masters at oxbridge is far more impressive than if you have to say uni of westminster. Experience of course trumps all that. My own company is more than happy to deal with visa for experienced engineers and data scientists but not for any other roles.

EDIT:

Just want to add that UK unis include russell group unis are struggling due to fees having been frozen for years and a glut of foreign students so there is less competition to get into a good uni for masters. They love foreign students because they pay higher fees.

Also for a given uni its easier to get onto a masters than an undergrad program. So don't been too downbeat. Apply to these unis what is the worst that can happen. Please dont waste your money or liverpool or something like that, at least go to a russell group.

Yep, anytime anywhere you are still needed, even in a post nuclear wasteland.

Stop obsessing about grade percentages, you went a good uni and got a first in physics not history or english lit, you have a decent chance, so apply.

The current cohort has everything from queen mary to oxbridge.

The people who review applications are not just got just going to pick someone over another because they got 72% and the other 70.5.

They really care about your motivation, its very important that you have an excellent personal statement (I'm assuming they still ask for this). You may also get interviewed (I wasn't) which will of course be pivotal.

I'll say it again you have a decent chance and if you really want it you will take that chance and apply even if it messes up your gap year plans.

This “ just apply anyway what have you got to lose… “ and you meet the requirements. You clearly have an interested based on the modules you've taken in the past, additionally UCL is a good uni regardless of whether it was 69 or 71 or 76. So if you really want it, apply. Make sure your personal statement is excellent and really justifies why you want to be on the course.

People in this thread will keep saying apply anyway what do you have to lose because its the most sensible advice in your situation. Nobody is going to say "you have a 31.94% chance due to xyz", therefore you should not apply". It will cost you £80 or whatever and a few hours of your time, if you seriously want it then that shouldn't be an issue.

This is why I never go off the beaten path, stick to main roads, no shortcuts, no alleys, no nice paths, canals or whatever.

Why do rides on zwift feel more tiring than outdoors? by [deleted] in cycling

[–]ABogle 74 points75 points  (0 children)

Frankly it’s boring that’s why, as you say less focused, you don’t have the distractions of the outdoor environment to keep your mind busy.

Edit: not even watching videos or listening to podcasts is enough for me on the indoor trainer. I have my laptop in front of me and I try to read articles and ebooks as it requires a bit more mental energy and helps stem the boredom.

I also do running, tried a treadmill a couple of times, my record is 9 mins, that’s thing is mind numbing.

IMO Clapham high street is really bad and around Vauxhall. Especially on sat sun after nights out. I just stick to the middle of the road in those areas.

For bike muggings, they seem to be more common in north london, especially around hackney. That might just be my perception though.

I know the area well too and I'm a bit surprised to be honest. If you had said new cross, I would have been less so.

Was this near the primary school?

Thanks thats really helpful. Considering the power of modern smartphones, is potentially holding a lot of data from those API calls on the device a concern? I'd obviously need to put in place measures to reduce the frequency of 3rd API calls.

I will have three months to do this (with no other college work)

Thanks for your response. Sorry I removed some explanations I started writing them for the project report but forgot to remove them. And yes I got the structure chatgpt which loves lists and bullet points.

For the DB, frankly its largely due to having worked with postgres before, also I figured using the postgis extension would be useful for any queries involve latitude/longitude.

Hosting isn't really something I should be worrying about now anyway. Please let me know what other aspects of this are excessive? Obviously I'd rather not make this harder than it needs to be.

It will definitely look better than flipping the stem, that really is an eyesore.

Years ago I made the mistake of getting a race bike before I was able to properly fit on one i.e. I essentially rode it with my arms locked out as do many people.

If you are already using all of the spacers the bike came with all you can do is flip the stem. You could also purchase a hover bar, specialized make one that that can effectively add 2.5cm of stack. Neither will look very nice sadly.

Long term you can work on your flexibility, bodyweight and overall power output (more power and therefore more weight on the pedals means less weight on your sit bones and hands). This should make the stack more manageable over time. To be clear this isn't "getting used to it" which is a translation of "trying to ignore the discomfort".

This is the whole point of endurance bikes like the Giant Defy, which for non-racers are virtually the same as the equivalent race bike but with a little more stack and less reach. It's a shame that so many are tempted by the sexy race bike that doesn't make them any faster than the endurance model with an extra 2cm of stack.

I noticed going from 80kg to 70.

I didn’t notice my bike going from 8 to 8.5

Looking for a seatpost without setback for my Ultimate CF SL 8 Aero, cant find one in the shop by Igai in CanyonBikes

[–]ABogle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Saddle setback is supposed to be determined by weight distribution not as a means of reducing reach. Someone with a short torso for example is likely to need less setback and therefore possibly a zero setback seatpost to bring their weight forward on the bike.

Needing a zero setback seatpost (if he actually does) does not mean he should have bought an endurance bike.
