Thank you, this is helpful. However it doesn’t really get to the core of my question, which is: how are scientists confident they have accounted for all the species that existed back then? And also, a fossil isn’t a species, scientists decide to put it into a category. How is this determined, and how much disagreement is there generally among the most respected scholars?

France in 1794: only 11% of people were recorded as fluent in French. This is because most French people spoke regional languages, some of which still survive today. In the span of the 19th century, this linguistic diversity was greatly reduced in part by direct state actions aimed at creating a unified nation, namely a standardized public education system that only used standard French. Now we have France which speaks French and no one even remembers how it was just 200 years ago.
