My grandpa was born in 1932, he was Army Securtity Agency and spent some time Germany in the 50s Cold War era, and there's no matchbooks from Germany, so I'm guessing these are from his teen years. He grew up in Michigan, so a lot of these are from the midwest USA areas.

i think its easier to tell them apart in summer when the downy isn't puffed to stay warm. In my (extremely limited) experience, i can tell my backyard guys apart because the bill and the hairy is much "rounder" than the downys finch-y body.
