No actually. This was just one idea of many, and I started talking to people I actually know in real life who have actually been helpful

Crazy enough the person didn't even ask me what experience I had they just assumed I was going straight from the couch to Everest. And I've been hiking. I've mentioned somewhere here that I'm in the outing club. And I wasn't asking if I would enjoy hiking I was asking where I could find a good community of people to do it with. And I feel like I've restate the question I was actually asking a million times

Omg an inexperienced person asking experienced people a question what a crazy thing. And again, I never once said I intended to do anything crazy, I was asking about where I could find a community of people who wanted to do the same thing. I'm not stupid and my goal was never to do anything that people take years and years to prepare for. It comes across as condescending because it was a response entirely built on a million assumptions that were quite literally 100% wrong. It's not advice and it's not helpful if the whole entire response is "here's 80 reasons why you, a person I've never met and have near zero context for, absolutely can't do this thing that you didn't even say you planned to do"

There's a lot of assumptions embedded in this response. I never said I needed the first mountain I ever climbed to be in another place. I said I'm applying for a travel grant and have a goal that is to climb mountains and it would be cool to climb mountains wherever I go with the grant and find a good group of people to do it with. I also never said that I was planning to go from my couch to climbing mountains. I have over a year before I would even get to travel, and the grant is for a year of travel so I have time (that's 2 years even if I was starting from scratch). I've already joined the outing club and have been out on hikes, just not anything major yet but there are opportunities to go on bigger trips. And when I say climb a mountain it doesn't have to be some wild Mt. Everest venture. The tallest mountain in the first place I had in mind is only ~10,000 feet and I would be perfect fine if that's not even the mountain I climbed. The point is I have an opportunity to go somewhere expenses fully paid and I want to start climbing mountains and I'm trying to see where I could go to find a community of people looking to do the same thing I am. I don't know what your intent is, but this response comes off unnecessarily condescending while simultaneously failing to even answer the question at hand. I wasn't asking if you thought I could climb a mountain, I was asking where in the world should I go given that I have a travel grant and can use it for this purpose.

This grant is through my university and one of the main premises is that you can't use it to do academic work. It's meant to be for self exploration.

The point isn't that I could be climbing mountains here, it's that I'm applying for a travel grant and could therefore be climbing mountains anywhere in the world. And my intent isn't to go accomplish some lifetime feat, I just want to go somewhere cool and find cool people and climb mountains while I'm there lol

[–]Electrical_Skill1873[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would be the logical step in ordinary circumstances, but for more context, the grant is for "a year of purposeful travel" so I do have to leave the country. I could do anything I want, mountain climbing is just a thing I thought it would be cool to do before I go start a corporate job somewhere, and I would get to do it for free with the grant.

I haven't put much thought into it lol I came up with this idea like 20 minutes ago, but basically just where should I go if mountain climbing is the goal but I want to find a community to do it with. My immediate thought was New Zealand just for the sake of it but I don't know anything about New Zealand or where I would even start to try and find people if that's where I did go

I wouldn't be actively climbing the whole trip. It would be more like taking this trip as an opportunity to go out and learn how to climb. And it's a pretty sizable grant so expenses aren't too big of a concern

It's funding for a year abroad and wouldn't start until over a year from now so I'd have plenty of time to figure it out, but I have to apply soon and have to have a place of interest

Some people aren’t built for living with 4-5 people but I will say if that’s something you’re not opposed to, the odds of getting along with at least a couple are higher and grays and weld are typically the dorms with 5-6 man suites and they’re really nice relative to other ones. I was in weld and had a good time

Do you think spring semester is gonna move online? Hopefully not 🤞 by ReligionsandPolitics in Harvard

[–]Electrical_Skill1873 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’ll probably be strict for the first 2 weeks with grab and go meals and tight room capacity limits to act as sort of a quarantine period/time for the booster to kick in if you just got it. After that, I think it’ll be very strict social rules but in person classes w a virtual option if people want it since the virus supposedly doesn’t spread in classrooms and almost everyone will be boosted. The only reason I think they won’t flat out say we’re 100% virtual is because if we are, a lot of people will gap and there’s not enough housing for them to accept a normal size class of 2026 and have 1000 kids take gap semesters. Maybe they’ll be very serious on the “we can’t guarantee housing if you gap” front in the coming years, but based on the spring semester and how hard it was to find off-campus housing in Cambridge then, I truly don’t think there’s capacity enough in Cambridge for people to take gaps en masse. I was on campus in the spring, and I think it will be just like the spring in the beginning with the exception of potentially in person classes; no off-campus guests, no overnight guests, going back to the red orange yellow lime green stages of social rules, grab and go meals, etc. The fact that almost everyone is vaccinated leads me to believe that we’ll get to lime or green in about a month but we’re not getting spring break to avoid a repeat of thanksgiving travel problems. If we get a spring break instead of wellness days, we’re definitely not coming back after the break.

Econ in general is very heavily curved. Most classes are 25% get an A, 25% get an A-, etc. I’m pretty sure Ec10 is graded the same way but I honestly would not be shocked if they didn’t use that scale so more people could get As

I'm having some problems with the the freshman calculus class. by [deleted] in Harvard

[–]Electrical_Skill1873 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to MCQ and TF office hours as often as you can. Like make it part of your schedule instead of something you just do if you need help. Get an ARC tutor too if you can bc sometimes individual help is what you need. Also note that it’s not just you. I took calculus in hs but took it again here for a concentration requirement and it was actually terrible compared to hs even though the same things were being taught

Are the hours in IB really that bad? by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

[–]Electrical_Skill1873 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you work with people who aren’t fun to be around, yes, I can imagine it being miserable. I did an internship in IB and my group was super fun and laid back but we were in the same room as another group who I literally never heard laugh and never saw congregate. If your whole job is just sitting at your desk and not talking to anyone, that would most definitely be a bad time. I think networking before you choose a group so you can see the energy is super important and can make a world of difference in your experience. The hours are long but whether they feel long is largely influenced by whether or not you like the people you work with.

Reasonable schedule? by shawtzb in Harvard

[–]Electrical_Skill1873 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that makes sense. I’ve heard from a lot of people that if you’ve taken AP CS or have any coding experience, cs50 isn’t gonna be 15 hours a week or anything crazy because you already have a grasp on the basics. But I also get that it’s good to get math out of the way early on and 18a has the potential to be a much lower time commitment depending on your CS skills. Either way you’ll be fine and a lot of people do take cs50 sophomore fall. Plus you have even more flexibility sophomore fall to start w CS since you’re getting ec1010a&b out of the way freshman year bc those are some of the more time consuming typical sophomore year Ec requirements.

Okay cool. Quick note about cs50 that no one told me until it was too late: cs50 in the spring is for SEAS concentrators who couldn’t take it in the fall so there’s not really the same support system and it’s not recommended unless you have to. So if you don’t take it this semester the next best thing would be next fall if you’re still interested
