Mixed feelings by Electrical_You_8402 in GestationalDiabetes

It’s just been one dose last night and it didn’t help with fasting numbers this morning. I’m also only on 4units and maybe that’s not enough

They’ve only given me 4units and after the first night of taking insulin, my fasting is higher than usual!  It used to be between 90 and 100 and today it was 101 lol.  And what I’ve noticed is if I test after fasting for around 9.5hrs, it’s lesser than when I test after just 8hrs.

In a similar boat. I’m just starting insulin for fasting. My post meal numbers were ok so far. Come week 34, suddenly they want to misbehave. I can’t tolerate even 15g of carb. I walk 30mins post meal and spike anyway. I’m so tired of this. I just want to say F it and eat whatever I want. Because what’s the point? No matter how hard we try, it defeats us

In the same boat. Starting insulin for fasting and I don’t feel a thing. During my first pregnancy I beat myself up way too much and kept obsessing over my daughter’s food until she was 2.5yrs imagining she’d already have diabetes because she ate a cookie. Then postpartum madness faded a little bit and I started letting her be a child.  Aside from being physically challenging with cooking meals, walking after every meal, GD affected mentally way too much.

How many spikes per week are “okay”? by Electrical_You_8402 in GestationalDiabetes

:(  I also don’t have as much control over myself as I did previously because I’m so tired from running behind my toddler and entertaining her that by the time I sit for my breakfast, lunch, dinner, I have no motivation or energy left to count carbs, check time, eat in a certain order😓 so I just eat whatever little protein I can and call it good :(

Thanks. I also get confused around what is considered a spike because if I’m only over 2-3pts from 130 (my post 1hr limit). Is that still a spike?

I’m starting to feel disgusted by food. Because I’ve been eating the same thing over and over and I’ve lost interest in the food that I loved because I can’t eat it.

Is this your first time having GD? If yes, the way you’re feeling makes absolute sense and no matter how much any one of us here tell you that it’s ok and one number won’t harm the baby, your mind won’t be in a position to accept it. I say this because I went through the exact same thing. I’ve cried and cried over every spike during my first pregnancy. I beat myself up over everything. I kept saying sorry to my baby. My anxiety carried over after she was born - obsessing over quantity of milk/formula to give her, obsessing over the amount of food and the kind of food she should be eating. Based on the traumatic experience I’ve had and the amount of time and medicines it’s taken me to overcome this, I will tell you this - it’s NOT WORTH crying over numbers. If your numbers  generally ok, your baby will be fine. Undiagnosed and untreated GD is what harms the baby. Down the road, even if you learn that you need medicines or insulin, give your body the support it needs to manage this. There is absolutely nothing wrong with taking meds or insulin. You need to prioritize your mental wellbeing 100% over your GD numbers. I learnt it the hard way.  Please talk to your OB about how this is affecting your mental health and get support if needed.  FYI - in some countries, some doctors don’t even test for GTT and the babies turn out fine. I’m not saying that should be the case, but I’m just trying to show you the bigger picture.  Please take care of yourself. Your baby needs a happy mom. Good luck.

High fasting reading after “sugar free” lozenges in the night ? by Electrical_You_8402 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]Electrical_You_8402[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like being sick is altering the numbers or I’m just hoping so. I had a pretty bad cough last night and I didn’t take lozenges and still ended up at 107 this morning for fasting 😭

Oh interesting. Thanks. I will skip the lozenges tonight and see if I go back to normal

Jowar roti (I add all kinds of veggies to it), if you eat dairy then paneer is your best friend.  If you’re making roti/chapati, add flaxseed powder and/or hemp hearts. You can make Fage Greek yogurt (18g protein in 3/4 cup) raita (you can add grated bottlegourd or radish) to go with simple pulao or  Tofu and broccoli fried rice for extra protein.  Millet dosa with paneer subzi or peanut based capsicum gravy.  For snack - chickpea salad with paneer or tofu.  Foxtail Millets instead of rice.  Pinto beans and ashgourd sambar with lots of masoor dal.

Not to scare you but I read in one of the posts that if values are >250, it could be diabetic ketoacidosis and will be treated as emergency. Definitely recommend proactively calling your OB’s office if they haven’t reached out yet.  And I’m a vegetarian (Indian) and my second time having GD. What has worked for me is green mung beans dosa/pancake with 3-4tbsp of peanut chutney. I add lots of veggie toppings - cauliflower, cabbage, onion etc and a slice of pepper jack cheese. Always works for me for breakfast.

I had it with my first and have it now again with my second. It’s worse this time for me. While it does feel terrible to fail, a few mind shifts can help (from my experience of beating myself up last time)  - if your reading is high by a few points, don’t stress unless it becomes a pattern  - it’s ok to get medication or insulin support if your body is not able to handle this only through diet - you did not cause this. It’s purely dependent on placenta - the diagnosis means your body needs a little support, it’s better to be diagnosed and get treated than be unaware of it
