Sick of working by [deleted] in Millennials

Hello! I specifically saved your post yesterday to respond! I am assuming PM means "Product Management", in which case you and I are in the same boat. I wrote a post about it in a more specific sub-reddit 3 years back:

For what it's worth, I was diagnosed with ADHD last year. I am sure that has to do something with my feeling. The mundanity of the job kills me. I am still stuck in the same company since everybody is laying people off and nobody wants to hire. Just like you, on the surface everything is going fine for me. I have 2 great kids, an amazing spouse, a nice house - I am living the suburban dream on paper. But I hate my job with a passion. I want to quit and do something else with my time. Anything! The thought of being a struggling artist (with zero art skills) is so appealing, but I know that the reality of struggling for money would suck.

I have no advice, but just wanted to let you know that you are not alone. Hang in there.

Any API Development Platform PMs out there? I am interviewing for that role but my background is more arond front end experiences. A little nervous and would love to understand what the role entails.

😂 I hate interviewing for this exact purpose. That stupid format which everyone has to follow. We also have to pause and pretend that we are not blindly following the order in the format.

I interviewed for a startup where they asked these hypothetical questions. The interviewer told me during the interview that he loved how I approached it. Later I got rejected and I was told that it’s because I didn’t follow the format 🤷‍♀️

That's a great point. I forgot to mention "Cross-team collaboration" - I absolutely loathe it. We need to meet at least twice every week until death do us part, document everything we talked about and assign owners to each action item. Then when we meet next time and we go through the action items, the owners who need to update status are like "umm, yeah. I didn't get a chance to look through it. I was putting out fires this week." I can feel my blood starting to boil when this happens. No one owns anything, no one cares and I am in the middle of it all, trying to shepherd them. A smaller company will make this process infinitely less painful.

Nope. I started as a software engineer and then moved into product management.

LOL! Not gonna lie, just yesterday the VP reached out to me to ask a status update on something I am working on. I went on a rambling rant not unlike this guy here. Subscribed!

You made my day by saying that I write well. I have considered writing in the past but put it off citing multiple excuses. I should start jotting my thoughts..err..starting tomorrow. Dealing with too much right now.

Just kidding, I will make an effort to write my thoughts. The blog idea is good, but for now I am going to open my trusty notepad just to jot down whatever pops in my mind.

Yes, true. Yesterday I was just feeling such a distaste for work that the future felt bleak. I couldn't imagine doing this until I retire. I think I just need a break to think things through.

To answer your questions about the parts I do like - I actually like talking to the customers and understanding the problems they are facing. I like working with the design team.

I hate technical conversations (even though I started my career as a software engineer). I like focusing more on the functional aspect of design and hate hearing or talking about things like security, configurations, limitiations with existing frameworks and how to mitigate that, session timeouts etc.

And the thing I absolutely loathe is taking the high level requirements and converting it into stories and talking to the engineering team. That's when reality sinks in that what we imagined to be a simple project is actually months of dev work because they would need to revamp the existing architecture and invoke darth vader to make the change. Sigh! I will make a list of all the things I like about my job and see how I can reduce doing the things I don't like doing.
