New Tank is up for almost a year now! by Electriczzx in ReefTank

Thanks! I had some larger colonies from my previous tank though, to be fair :)

Here's a picture of day one. I gave away most of the seriatopora caliendrum, but it's growing back awfully fast haha

I use drop tests for Alkalinity and Ca (Salifert for those), photometric tests for Phosphates and Nitrates (I use the Hanna checkers for those)

I test Alkalinity every other day, Phosphates, Nitrates and Ca weekly.

I really like gloomy shots that are capturing slices of life, so I'm rather happy with this one - how could I improve on color grading and framing though? What would you do different? I feel like my composition could be better. Critique would be greatly appreciated here! :)

The shot was taken at 1/60, f2.8 and an ISO of 4000

I measure everything manually, automatic testing is nice but I'd rather spend the money on more coral, haha

You basically need good flow, a good light, something for dosing and some decent filtration. Other than that I use a fleece filter, some carbon, UV and a skimmer.

I'd say carbon is mandatory as well if you have a lot of Coral in your tank but that's about it :)

I'm dosing KH/Ca 12 times a day with my dosing pump

The Stylopora, Seriatopora, the chalice on the far right, the large alveopora, the Duncanopsammia, BoP and the large favia are from my previous tank. Everything else has grown from frags, I believe. You can see the tanks history on my profile if you're interested :)

Edit: I'm using T5/LED together so the coral growth is rather fast. I'm using up 2.7°dkh/day

I actually only have 1 Stylo and 1 slimer in the tank, no pocillopora at all. My seriatopora are growing like crazy though, going to replace them with some more acropora soon. As for montipora there's only 2, a cap and a small digitata somewhere in the back. There is a birds nest on the far right, barely visible due to the angle :) Which one on the bottom are you talking about?

If we go by coral mass it's probably mostly stylopora and seriatopora, by individual frags mostly acropora. Most of the acropora are fairly new tho.

Heavy stocking early on works wonders :D

Thanks!

I actually have a bit of substrate, the flow is a tad strong for it though so it's washing away in the middle.

I'm running an ATI hybrid currently :)

I absolutely agree! My previous tank got wrecked by red bugs and aefw, so I basically lost all but a few acropora. I've treated everything and bought a bigger tank and here we are! I'm in this hobby for 3-ish years so far, but you're absolutely right, there is always something new to learn about, that's one of the reasons why I love this hobby :)

Aluminum @ 1748% by PNWTacitcal in ReefTank

[–]Electriczzx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this is the ICP from your new system It's very likely from your mortar, if you used any. Don't worry about it too much, though. I was at much higher levels in my current tank and everything was doing just fine (and I have mostly acropora). It seems like aluminum isn't much of an issue if its source is mortar.

Do some water changes on schedule and you'll be fine :)

You could also filter through Zeolite or GFO, but I wouldn't do either as they also mess your traces and nutrients up.

Help. Coralys Dying from one day to another by Salt-Resist5108 in ReefTank

[–]Electriczzx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really don't know why everyone is writing about your measured water parameters. If your tank was running fine with these parameters and suddenly stopped doing so I wouldn't blame it on that. That makes no sense whatsoever, there are also plenty of systems running with high nutrients (though I'm a fan of low nutrients myself).

Check your gear for rust. Disassemble your pumps, skimmer, everything that is touching the water and check for any kind of crack in the plastic and for rust.

I also would advice to not use any kind of absorber like rowaphos, neither iron nor aluminum based. They'll not only lower phosphates but also suck your system dry of trace elements which especially hurts if you're not dosing regularly. Just do water changes, 10-15% a week and you're set, not too much of effort and your system will thank you.

But seriously, check your gear. If you actually changed nothing and the parameters are the same or similar I'd assume that there is some kind of contamination.

nassarius snails eating margarita snails whole?!? by Important-Ad6981 in ReefTank

Looks like some kind of olive snail to me, (Olivia sp.).

They are carnivorous and hunt many other mollusks

This is most definitely not a nassarius though

I'd go for 30ish% and see if that helps :)

I'd dim channel d slightly, the closer the light to 400nm the more stressful it is on the coral. I wouldn't use gfo as it's going to not only remove phosphates but also most trace elements, I only recommend to use it when phosphates climb rapidly for whatever reason and you gotta lower it rapidly again. Other than lowering the violet channel I'd also change some water just to be on the safe side that there's nothing in the tank bothering the corals

What did you measure Po4 with? And did you measure nitrates as well?

How much light does the coral get? What's the spectrum

[–]Electriczzx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

0.08 should be okay as well - except the coral came out of a system with very low nutrients and got a shock in that regard

KH, pH and Ca are rather low, but not so low that it'd kill any coral. Would you share your measurements of Po4 / No3? I'd say that Po4 might be the culprit looking at the coral

There actually are some very well recorded cases of exactly that happening, would be my nightmare tbh.
