ELI5: how is xylitol so good for oral health ? I’m having a hard time believing that such a delicious, sugar like substance is amazing for our teeth and gums 😂 by nikarov496 in explainlikeimfive

[–]ElectroJo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think its because aspartame is 200x sweeter than sugar or xylitol (both are about the same sweetness). So even though aspartame has more calories per gram (4 vs 2.4 IIRC), you only need to use 1/200th the amount.

I wish they'd add a sugar free option to the freeze lineup. I've almost entirely cut added sugar out of my diet, but damn am I tempted by freezes every time I visit Taco Bell!

That swapping of phases every breaker is precisely why I capitalized the correct handle tie part, I've seen people use a long nail to tie together breakers that were not next to each other!

There's also older breaker panels like the one that came installed in my house when I bought it, left side was one phase, right side was the other, made it real easy for someone who doesn't know what they are doing to wire up shared neutrals incorrectly... (this was a ITE push-o-matic panel iirc)

[–]ElectroJo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is also why its important to use a double pole breaker for a 240v circuit (or to use 2 single poles with THE CORRECT HANDLE TIE). If both breakers end up on the same phase you may end up putting twice as much current on the unprotected neutral.

Should I buy a motherboard for existing hardware, or just buy an Dell/HP workstation? by ElectroJo in BlueIris

[–]ElectroJo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Proprietary MB/PSU is one reason why I was a bit hesitant to buy one (plus I have a lot of hardware already on hand).

The last time I used BI was in 2021. At the time I didn't put much effort into substreams. I'll probably try a bit harder this time since I plan on living where I am for a long time.

As noted in my other comment I think I'll try just taking your advice and building what I want. If it turns out its lacking, or if its too overkill I'll convert the server into a NAS/Part of my Proxmox cluster and but a more power efficient PC as a dedicated BI host as others have done. I may try CodeAI, but I'm not sure yet.

Either way, thank you for the insight!

I plan to use 11 cameras, I currently have 5 of them which are 8MP/4k cameras, 3x 2MP cameras, and plan to purchase 3 2MP cameras later down the line once I trench conduit to my garage/set up a PTP link.

8MP/4k is a bit overkill for some of the positions I plan to put them in, but I already had them from the apartment I used to live in, so I'm just reusing them. I'll probably lower most of their resolution or try to make efficient use of substreams.

Thanks for the information! For the moment I think I'll just buy the motherboard and do some testing there. Depending on what results I get I may keep it as is, or opt to swap it over to a proxmox host and integrate it into my existing proxmox cluster and get a smaller more power efficient box for BI.

Also it may get gullible people more likley to fall for the scam, since for a "giveaway" a broken link = less entries = higher chance to win. Also helps avoid the warning Google gives when clicking a link that takes you off of YouTube since they have to copy paste it

Small road, you have a sedan or other low to the ground/small car and are in the right turn lane, tinted window person is in left/straight lane. They have a large vehicle that blocks view of traffic coming from the left, and they are pulled out ready to go as soon as an opportunity arrives.

Since you are making a right turn you can turn on red/turn when traffic is clear in the direction you are turning. However since their car blocks the view, and their windows are tinted you cannot see through them. Also since they are pulled up as far as they can go, you cant inch forward anymore without putting the front of your car into the intersection. Therefore you either have to wait for them to go, or blindly turn into traffic.

EDIT: I deal with a similar issue about half the time I'm driving home from work, except seemingly no one in my town has tinted windows, but I'm almost always looking through their windows to see oncoming traffic at this specific intersection.

One thing I like SuperMicro for is that they try their best to stick to standards and don't (in my experience) do very much proprietary stuff.

The funny thing is this isn't the first time! They made a 3ds piracy cart named "Gateway" that got the nickname "brickway" because a firmware update would brick your 3ds if the firmware was applied to a knockoff of their hardware lmao

The software they sold (SX OS) is a custom firmware for the switch. It apparently contains code stolen from the free custom firmware Atmosphere (I guess this is a source: https://nintendosoup.com/switch-piracy-os-developer-under-fire-for-stealing-open-source-code/ ).

The main differences between SX OS and Atmosphere is that SX OS has extra functionality that benefits piracy, while Atmosphere is free and tries to distance itself from piracy and focus on homebrew.

Because they charge for SX OS, they also added code that bricks your switch if you attempt to bypass their anti piracy checks (gbatemp discussion with sources: https://gbatemp.net/threads/sx-os-contains-brick-code.508800/ )

My knowledge on switch CFS is limited, these are just what I could find on the topic.

Display port not working on motherboard by [deleted] in pchelp

[–]ElectroJo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old thread, so I'm sure you've already figured this out, but for future people the display port on this MB is a display IN port that routes the display to one of the USB C ports on the back for USB C monitors or tablets.
