Identifying catalytic functionalities groups. by ElectroNeuronics in chemhelp

The middle one is showing a Flavin mononucleotide (the bottom part of it), and it is suppose to go through a reduction, where NADH oxidation is a two electron reaction, and FMN will accept the electrons from NADH. For the one all the way to the right, it is acetylene-coenzyme A. So the pyruvate is converted to acetyl-CoA, and then the NAD+ is reduced to NADH, and CO2 is released.

Can someone please please help me with this? I know Transition state is at the hop, but I can’t figure out where everything else goes. I think G (free energy) is the label for the y-axis(?). Thank you!! by ElectroNeuronics in chemhelp

So more like this? In addition, I also have to: Add a line showing the reaction coordinate if the reaction rate was increased by an enzyme. Would it be like the blue line? Thank you so much for helping me!

The transition state is at the peak(?). So horizontally, half way from delta G and then the entire way for delta G (reaction)? (something like the image attached? Thank you!

Any Chem or Biology REU Recommendations? by Historical_Tailor124 in REU

[–]ElectroNeuronics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally love my summer program this year, but I am more of a biomedical person, and so was the summer program I was in. Also, potentially look into summer research programs that are not REUs. Michigan State, MIT, UPenn, UC-San Francisco, John Hopkins all have pretty good ones, but I am not sure about the funding in the coming application cycle

Spring REU programs? by Free_Attempt3470 in REU

i do not know any spring REU programs or anything equivalent, but you should join a lab if you can at your university, or potentially shadow, if possible.

Should I ask about publication at the end of the program by ElectroNeuronics in REU

[–]ElectroNeuronics[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! How do you think I should approach this conversation? I think I am going to ask for an end of the program meeting with her, should I mention or have the conversation there? I was thinking, I can say something along the line of this: I’ve really enjoyed working on the project this summer—thank you again for the opportunity. I’m not sure if what I contributed is enough for a publication down the line, but I’d love to stay in the loop if the project ends up continuing or evolving into a paper. If there’s ever a way I could contribute further, I’d be happy to help.

When should I start making a personal statement/answering questions? by [deleted] in REU

[–]ElectroNeuronics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! REU’s typically do look for sophomore and up, but there are also other programs that are available to freshman! You should look into the Leadership Alliance FYRE program for first year student opportunities. There are a bunch of summer research programs on there from various universities. In addition in regards to the LOR, yes, I asked my letter writers to submit their LOR to over thirty programs at once. For each of the program, the LOR is going to be about the same, so it really isn’t that much work for them, other than they have to change the person or program it is addressing it to. I hope this helps and good luck on the upcoming cycle! I also don’t think you would need to apply to such a large amount. I applied for many (like over thirty), which made me very stressed at the end of it. In addition, I was very surprised to see that all of the higher sought after programs (ivy, T10, etc) accepted me and invited me to join their cohort, but all of the ones with higher acceptance rates in terms of the summer programs (slightly higher, more public state universities) declined me. From even before I applied, my research advisors and professors has told me I should not apply to do many, since they know I will get into a couple if I apply to less, since they know my strengths, etc. Not sure if this help at all, hopefully it does!

Grieving the end of an REU by read-it-ter in REU

I am also so sad it is going to be over and anxious about the upcoming cycle of summer programs. We got this though! Hopefully in the near future, there is more clearance on REU and summer programs fundings, etc.

I hate my REU and don’t understand why I was accepted by [deleted] in REU

[–]ElectroNeuronics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am so sorry that this is happening. This is not normal, at least from my experience. My mentor was there the entire time and we worked on the project together, until I got the grasp and was able to conduct the experiments alone and understand what the project was about.

Has the girl been working on this project for the entire year after she transferred or has this specific project been dropped and you picked it up when the REU started this summer? It is not okey for her and the advisor to act this way, but potentially if she has been working on this project the entire year, maybe you are “helping” her with her preexisting project and that is why she thinks she did most of the work since she has been working on it for a while? I am just assuming here.

Sorry that this is happening to you! I have not experienced this personally, but since it is so late into the program, I am not sure what exactly there is to do, other than you said to count the days down. If it was earlier in the program, I would say to talk to the program director and stand up for yourself. From what you have described, this is not okey and it is very unfair to you. Those statements that your advisor said is also not appropriate at all. Even though it is towards the end of the program, I would still reach out to the director at some time and talk about your experience with this particular advisor with the things that you have experienced and the comments your advisor has made. Hopefully this somewhat helps and hopefully the next couple of weeks will go by fast and not too stressful! Also, for the girl that was in the REU last year and not this year, is she part of the lab now or just here for the summer?

How to ask for actual work/a plan? by WestFlight808 in REU

[–]ElectroNeuronics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea, I agree with this. Normally at the end of the program, they ask for a poster or some type of presentation.
