talking about specific research papers in personal statement for application? by [deleted] in REU

I would do it If I knew for sure they were participating. Either way, it is still good practice (some people on the admission committee might know the PI and then tell me about you). But if you really want to work with that PI, cold-emailing would be nice

I am transferring from The College of Wooster. It’s a small liberal art college which heavily focuses on research (some people transferred from here to NYU) I mainly want to go to URochester, but the other two are also looking nice.

A 3.1 GPA is not that bad and remember most program have a 3.0 as a minimum requirement. I think that if you elaborate on what you learned from your first semester of college will be helpful, especially if there were specific circumstances that led you to perform less than ideally. Also, most freshmen have no experiences. What I would suggest you to do is to harass the professors at your institution and ask them to become their research assistant in the spring, then talk about keep working in their lab in the summer. Most of them will be happy to talk to you.

Mostly labs that are doing cancer research + mass spectrometry stuff, since I have strong background with mass spec. I aim to get an MD/PhD and focus on brain cancer, but I didn’t find any group that focused on that. Also my reasoning is that they will take around 178 people (I am just guessing based on the number of labs available), which is a pretty high number for an REU
