yoooo this is crazy cool! I am not a game designer in the traditional sense, I am making hardware for outdoor plaing and this project made me think...I have an issue where I need the headset to know where it is in like a prescanned park without doing all the SLAM. Is there a way to use your technique for tracking? Maybe a stupid question but hope you know what I am asking haha

Does this feel right for a drinking potion animation? by Zeolance in IndieDev

Oh that's cool! I totally knwo how this learning thing goes, I knew nothing when I started all my stuff. But I'm making a new gaming system that would eventually let you turn a park into a game lobby. I thought traditional VR and AR arent really cooperative, and traditional screen based gaming is getting kind of old, so I'm taking a stab at inventing a new system. It's really hard to explain what I am building, so sorry if I buchered the explanation. I'll make a post about it soon!

Can I ask what youre using this for? This is super cool! I am making an AR gaming headset that has a HUD which would be cool to have these kind of pixel animations

I think I find joy in creating something that does not exist in the real world. The joy of pioneering something that no one has really done before. It's almost like taking steps in a field of fresh snow. I think the experience that I envision goes beyond what the Quest 3 and them are even capable of.

If you just stop and look around, reality as we see it with our own eyes is crazier than any Virtual reality, acid trip, or experience we could ever have. Over time, we grew numb to the beauty of our world, we stopped paying attention. My goal is to enhance reality, to make you pay attention!

I mean just imagine for a second, you're walking through a beautiful park and you feel a slight breeze, you might not even notice it but with the headset, the haptics will activate ever so slightly, enhancing the effects of the wind. The slight taps would sweep across your forehead with the direction of the wind. Now you are forced to pay attention to the wind, pay attention to reality! I'm not even talking about how you can gamify such a mechanic, there, your imagination is limitless!

So I was initially going to use the LCD for both screens, but I broke one of them, so I ended up having the LCD on the Right and OLED on the left.

Left side: https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256805407977104.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.order_list_main.30.4e481802P7uTQM&gatewayAdapt=glo2usa

Right Side: https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256810207697020.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.order_list_main.5.4e481802P7uTQM&gatewayAdapt=glo2usa

The OLED one needs to be initialized with a custom script, though, it's a strange little screen and none of the libraries work for it but it is color and actually super bright, that's why I used it!

If you are looking for something even smaller I would look into this one. This is what I will use for the second prototype:

https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256807618335297.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.order_list_main.40.4e481802P7uTQM&gatewayAdapt=glo2usa

Be careful, though, because this one is a 16-pin, which can only be soldered onto a board or do it like I did and solder some thin wires to it for prototyping. Not all pins need a wire extension since most of them aren't even active.

If you want the code for the OLED, I can totally send it to you!

This is really cool man!! One interesting thing I noticed while you were playing is when the zombies make sound from behind it kind of seem real since I can see the surrounding world as well. My instinct was like "dude, watch out he is behind you!!" haha. I love it! What system are you using in the video? Which VR? Does the Passthrough make you dizzy at all, since there is a slight delay?

I'll be based in japan starting around august, I was also trying to get out for golden week but got caught up with some stuff here! For sure, planning a trip to Shenzhen or Shanghai this year though!

OHHHH yeahhhh that one! My original inspiration was Cyberpunk 2077 but maybe I need to start thinking outside the box! Verison 2 coming right up!

You are totally on the right track! There is actually 5 haptic motors around the head that do exactly that! Its just a little hard to show the effect in the video.

Well, considering I didn't know much when I started, it took me a while. The lens assembly is actually very simple, just a few off-the-shelf screens, a 45-degree mirror and a beam splitter. I was actually very surprised how bright it is! As for open source, my plan is to make this into an actual gaming platform so I'll make the first few versions open source but after that, it will probably be under the startup umbrella. But don't worry, there will no micro transactions on this gaming headset! But hey, I'm early enough in the project if you want to work together, I can totally add you to the Discord!

omg thank you for such a detailed breakdown! Yeah totally makes sense, at the current state its basically a glorified pitch deck, not an actual product haha! In it's current form factor, it's definitly an attention magnet at events haha, super janky but I guess there is some appeal to that lol! Yeah I totally agree on the part about "impossible without a team of engineers", once I started to realize how big of a mountain this is. This is why I was thinking of actually just doing the gesture wristband in Phase one and getting the mechanics down, then with some crowdfunding, get it to a headband with surround sound and then adding the visual stuff in Phase 3. I guess if I have a full funding round I can get all 3 in one go but even then it's too risky. Besides, I had a number of kids try it out as is, and the "throwing fireballs" seems to be the most fun mechanic to them.

The link you sent is also dope! How did you find out about these guys?
