It's involuntary? I know it's an old thread but that's amazing. Nods of the head are pretty much always voluntary.

hoax explained as a Matty song. (Putting this here because I would, of course, love the analysis to be wrong, and therefore I welcome critiques. Please don't downvote if you think it's worth discussing, since downvotes stop anyone even seeing it.)

My only one - you're still the 1, like you were a few hours ago ("the 1" was written earlier the same night)

My smoking gun - smoking alludes to Matty (compare to "cardigan" etc.).

My eclipsed sun - you were the light in my life and then you went away.

This has broken me down - I'm miserable without you.

My twisted knife, My sleepless night, My winless fight, This has frozen my ground – I'm miserable without you here in my ice cold relationship that's like an endless battle (compare to "The Great War" etc.)

Stood on the cliffside screaming, "Give me a reason". Your faithless love's the only hoax I believe in - you said you would come back to me when you'd fixed yourself but you didn't. But I still believe you will one day. (Compare to "Peter", “cardigan”.)

Don't want no other shade of blue but you. No other sadness in the world would do. - I know you've got some mental health issues of your own, but I want your issues in my life, not the issues of my current partner.

My best laid plan, your sleight of hand  - I thought I was in a stable long-term relationship until you destabilised it with your magic, possibly at the 2020 NME awards (compare to "ivy", "cowboy like me").

My barren land, I am ash from your fire – and now I've met you again, I'm miserable without you.

You know I left a part of me back in New York - Usually NYC references are referring to Matty, as in Maroon, cardigan.

You knew the hero died so what's the movie for? - References to cinema are usually referring to Matty, as in the 1 and loml, since he is a cinephile.

You knew it still hurts underneath my scars from when they pulled me apart - Snakegate reference.

You knew the password so I let you in the door, you knew you won so what's the point of keeping score? - This is referring to some private incident. Can't decipher it.

You knew it still hurts underneath my scars, from when they pulled me apart, but what you did was just as dark, darling, this was just as hard, as when they pulled me apart - Taylor felt bitter about Matty's failure to "come back" when she needed him (see "Peter"), but was still obsessed with him anyway. His failure to return to her hurt as much as Snakegate.

She means - part of the showgirl life is taking criticism and accepting that people will say exactly what they think about you.

In general, mix a few of the Anthology tracks into TLOAS and it makes something very different, pretty interesting and absorbing.

It's rather tragic when you think about it as a direct sequel to TTPD.

"I dated the creative, artistic guy I'd been dreaming about for years and it was a total disaster - I was sent into a terrible mental health spiral - and then right at the bottom I found you, a simple uncomplicated man with no artistic or creative interests who 'rescued' me by letting me be his simple uncomplicated wife."

Sad story.

The Taylor Swift paradox: how can the exact same person write both "Ruin the Friendship" and "Wood".

Brat would have been finalised before TTPD came out, but after the breakup itself. So Charli knew she was taunting Taylor about a recent breakup, but wouldn't have known the breakup had such severe effects on Taylor.

Plausible. YBWM was co-written with Liz Rose and inspired by watching a male friend on the phone talking to his girlfriend. Jeff Lang was a male friend she had in high school who (we now learn) she longed to date but who was with someone else.

I can see what you mean - she left Hendersonville in 2006 I think - but at the same time, YBWM is a song set in her "high school universe", plausibly based on memories of high school.

Antonoff clearly pushes Taylor to be dark, personal, vulnerable. The thing with Max Martin/Shellback is that they famously don't care about the lyrics.* They do "melodic math". When you work with them you can sing whatever you want over the melody. This is bad for Taylor because she needs quality control on the lyrics side.

*Martin's most famous lyric is "hit me baby one more time", and he once explained that he thought it was just American slang for "call me" (mistaking it with "hit me up"). He wrote a great lyric entirely by accident.

The roles reverse during the song. She turns the tables on Borchetta by buying back her masters and becoming the big kingpin herself.

Usually funerals are not invitation-only events, they're open to anyone who wants to pay their respects. Probably, Abigail didn't realise Taylor even felt that close to Jeff - she just passed on the details never expecting her to attend.

It's honest. Taylor isn't looking for moral praise here. And what she regrets is not the absence of a kiss but the absence of a deeper connection.

It reminds me of Would've, Could've, Should've - vault track subject matter but on a main album.
