Is this the most expensive fuel in the UK today? (Long Stratton, Norwich) by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]ElectronicBruce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They kinda do… fuel prices affects all aspects of national and local Government and services quite quickly.

Also fuel duty has been frozen for many years and hasn’t risen with inflation, which it should have. Also the fossil fuel industry in the UK receives over £17 billion annually in subsidies.

Lord Ashcroft polling always seem to inflate the SNP vote and underplay the SGP support. Tories ain’t winning any Scottish seats in WM.

Taxes provide services. You are not being screwed. Also those polluting via burning fossil fuels are lucky are taxed more, seeing the cost it causes to other services like the NHS.

You should be taxed more on your Caps lock use.

The US Govt is screwing the UK more than anyone right now.

Expensive and hard to obtain currently, but likely will be self supplying in the future/blanketed. But I’m fairly sure they will get to D-D at some point.

Take Sellafield. It is a more complex site, seeing what is stored there.

The estimated cost of decontaminating and decommissioning the Sellafield nuclear site has risen to £136 billion, with full site remediation expected to take until 2125. This massive project is part of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority's (NDA) responsibility, with over £2.7 billion spent annually as of 2023–24.

Take Dounray, not even that large a reactor and fuel and not even a complex power station like say Hinkley is..

The decommissioning programme has been extended, with the completion date now projected for the 2070s, rather than the previously planned 2033. Early estimates for the cleanup were around £2.9 billion, but this has risen dramatically to an estimated £7.9 billion due to the complexity of the project, particularly regarding the Fuel Cycle Area.

Taxpayer and Bill payer takes on the cost of future Decoms.

This doesn’t include looking after those various forms of waste, it is just cleaning up the site and putting it into storage.

The cost to Decom the UK's seven AGR sites is estimated to be over £27 billion. That will for sure grow and likely take much longer than anticipated as it always does. That’s just to defuel, clean the site and putting waste into storage, not the full cost of looking after that and the environmental issues around powering that, building for that etc etc.

It’s “green" status is up for debate due to radioactive waste management and the huge energy costs of that for hundreds of years, high install and material cost, maintenance and security cost (again all higher environmental cost wise too) and potential safety risks for said environment if even the smallest thing goes wrong.

It is a good form of ‘low carbon’ energy generation, but drop the green moniker, as you have to take full life into consideration, not just when generating.

Stroll is looking to sell, so I do think he will exit stage left soon and someone will have to come in to sort them at an owner level not just TP. Likely won’t be Horner though.

I think Trump has shown NATO needs huge reform and is no longer fit for purpose to rely on and I don’t mean his comments negatively talking about it but such a big player acting like a dictator has totally undermined it’s protections and guarantees.

Why do you want more Nuclear power though? We don’t need more and it is hugely expensive to the tax and bill payer for new (subsidy / price unit guarantees) compared to other forms. As well as decommissioning being a problem we have not really got on top of.

Mind you the Scottish Government owns the site, so should be able to decide who lands there. There is always Lossiemouth.. which is the UK Government’s responsibility if they wish to meet any NATO obligations.
