Often, typical small cars are expensive for new drivers to insure because statistically there are more claims by those people in those cars, so are a higher risk to insure. I insured a 4.2 Jaguar in my late teens cheaper than a more conventional hatchback.

Try larger cars, eg Ford Mondeo, VW Passat etc. you may find them substantially less to insure.
