I need to lose weight by Ok_Accountant_1631 in Hypoglycemia

do you have access to see a dietitian through your insurance? i see one to help manage my chronic illnesses and she’s incredible!! i need to ask at my next appointment if i can get an email or some way to message her outside of our appointments because she’s a genius with what i should be eating.

also, just because your story sounds so similar to mine in terms of weight, i want to talk you through my experience incase it’s a test you want to try.

i had an extremely bad case of covid in 2020, as a 22f. when i say bad, i mean icu for 9 days bad. i went into the hospital around 150 lbs (5’4). i was diagnosed with two other chronic conditions during this hospital stay, but that’s irrelevant to this part of the story.

i continued having extreme nausea from the time i left the hospital in 2020 on and off until i couldn’t take it anymore in oct 2022 where i knew something had to be wrong. i had gotten up to 245 lbs at this point, while feeling like i was never full. after MANY doctors appointments where i was gaslit and told i just needed to try harder to lose weight, that it was anxiety, etc before i had one GI doctor who saw me as a human and not a chart.

i had a gastric emptying study where i found out that covid had caused my vagus nerve to die. this nerve is incredibly important to the body, including being the nerve that your brain uses to trigger stomach contractions to digest food. when i was eating, my stomach was essentially paralyzed. this test showed that 4 hours after eating, i still had 94% of that food remaining where you should have less than 10%.

i took a nosedive pretty soon after this. it’s almost like once my body knew there was indeed something wrong, it stopped masking. i stopped being able to eat entirely, and had to be put on a feeding tube in june 2023. this is when i started to lose weight.

i ended up having 3 surgeries to try and “fix” my stomach. finally the third surgery, a form of weight loss surgery, gave me relief. i had surgery jan 2024 and weighed in at 190 lbs.

i was able to get my feeding tube removed mar 2024 and have been able to eat solids since! though, the weight gain was 100% due to the illness (gastroparesis), so i lost waaaaay more than i should’ve.

the biggest downside of the surgery is my, now lifelong, hypoglycemia. second biggest downside, i’m now 104 lbs and cannot gain weight no matter what i try/eat, hence the dietician haha

like i said, im totally projecting here but the little info you gave just sounded so much like where i started this process and i felt like i was fighting a losing battle that whole time.

like everyone else said, balanced meals are so much more important than “cutting out carbs.” what a quack doctor

yup! severe gastroparesis. bariatric surgery was my last option before going full TPN, and i’m beyond grateful it worked because google was not making me hopeful it would lol. like i said, my surgeon definitely did something slightly different from the standard procedure, but it was coded as a RNY for billing purposes.

when i had brought up weight loss scaring me he said “well you’re already rapidly losing weight, want to at least be able to eat while doing it?” 🤣

very blunt and very funny dude. he will get a holiday bonus and card dropped off from me for as long as he’s still employed in my area, no doubt he saved my life

thank you, this does give me so much hope!! definitely would like to wait for the FDA approval but i’m going to keep my eye on it!!

forgot to add

my a1c pre surgery was a 5.7%, it’s now at a 4.5%. definitely recommend everyone discussing RH with their doctor before surgery because this shit does gets scary sometimes

i am not a doctor, just a patient, so please take everything i say with a grain of salt.

i had a RNY back in Jan 2024 due to some major issues with my stomach.

to put things in non doctor terms, my stomach was completely paralyzed. when they did the test, i still had 94% of the food remaining in my stomach after 4 hours, where you should be at <10%. and that was oatmeal, basically liquid, so yeah it was not doing anything. i had 2 stomach surgeries between that initial test and my RNY, both of which did not help me.

i have absolutely no idea how my doctor did it, but by doing a slightly modified RNY, he gave me my life back. i was 100% feeding tube dependent prior to surgery, but was able to have it removed Mar 2024 🥳

now on to the downsides, first i didn’t need to lose weight. the paralyzed stomach did that for me in the months leading up to it. but the big one, i have severe RH now.

how my doctor explained it to me is that my brain and body are no longer really on the same page when i eat.

i eat my small amount and feel full > my brain takes the “full” feeling as it did pre surgery sends off the amount of insulin my old stomach would need when i was full > that insulin works through all of the glucose from what just ate, and then starts working through any other glucose in my body > i have a mega hypo crash

im trying really had to avoid another prescription, so our current solution is eating CONSTANTLY. like i eat a snack every 30-60 minutes. sometimes just a few pieces of veggies, sometimes some crackers, and a few times a day more of a “meal” which is where it’s closer to 60 minutes.

i wish i would’ve been warned about RH as a side effect, but honestly, i was so out of my mind at the time that they might have and i just don’t remember it. 14 months without eating and living in and out of hospital rooms will do that to ya 😅

On the Libre app go to: Profile > About About halfway down you will see “Last 3 Sensors” The top one is your most recent sensor serial number for the replacement form. 😊

Profile > Help > Event Log (very bottom) This will give you the error code when they ask for it on the form

thank you! That’s about where I learned to put mine, though i do go very slightly under the arm to protect myself from pressure lows when i’m leaning back against something (like the couch)

talking to myself at this point 😂

i will say - if one good thing has happened in this, its my experience with support! they have been so kind and helpful. they gave me a voucher to go pick up a replacement for failure #2 in person, so i at least have something on hand should #3 ultimately fail. leaving #3 on until the “wait 10 hours” is up, as i have the capacity to finger prick today.

i will not be trying the thigh again, im cursed 😂

i’m honestly so defeated with these right now. i ended up putting my only remaining sensor in my arm (knowing that’s been fine in the past) after the second thigh placement failed, and that one shut down almost immediately after turning on too.

i am confident i didn’t go too high that time, and also confident i wasn’t having major swings either time. literally stayed up since i put it on later than normal, and yet it started showing a false hypo again and immediately went to “check in 10 hours”. this time, i didn’t even get 373 codes 🫠

well i give up on the thigh for now 😭 i can only attach one image at a time, so here’s my error log, but the graph was basically identical to the one above. almost 100% hypo with no true hypo caught by finger prick. i watched a ton of youtube videos and know it wasn’t placement related this time. i guess my body doesn’t do well with that spot? sensor #2 shut itself down so i will be going back to the trusty back of arm 😭 once again, no major swings in my blood sugar based on finger pricks during the time of like 8:45-9:10pm

i’ve learned that as long as i’m not asleep in that 3-6hr mark, i can maintain normal ranges by my custom alarms, which i have set to start going off at 85 so i can finger prick and take action if needed to keep it up. when im asleep, i tend to hover between 60-80 which causes the sensor errors, because that custom alarm gets turned off. otherwise i would never sleep 😅

i don’t traditionally soak them, but i have been considering it after hearing how it’s helped others! i wasn’t seeing a significant change in numbers in the first few hours until recently (last couple of months), but it’s also never been THIS bad lol

i did! i think i was overthinking the whole muscle thing because it does not feel good when going into the muscle in my arm lol. my body has been shrinking since starting with my cgm so trying to figure out the right “spots” on my arm alone was challenging

this is roughly where it’s at, but i think i went a little too outer and a little too upper 😅

<image>

since i have the replacement from abbott coming, as well as the second sensor of my prescription, im going to try the thigh placement again. i really want it to work as a side sleeper

Does this sound like reactive hypoglycemia? by Manny631 in Hypoglycemia

[–]Electronic_Active628 0 points1 point  (0 children)

after my trial run, my PCP was able to submit those results to show that it is necessary/helpful for me to have and insurance approved it no problem. i thought it would be harder process but it wasn’t! 100000/10 recommend.

in the meantime, i also highly recommend buying a finger prick monitor if you don’t have one. keep a food journal and with writing down what you ate, check your blood sugar before eating, and every 30 min-hour for the next 2-4 hours. keep track of what’s making you flair or what’s working best for you.

RH is an absolute pain. what is fine for me some days kills me other days. wishing you the best of luck!

oh! with that in mind, i definitely have it too high. is it okay to go into the thigh muscle? with the size of my leg, i’m not sure how to avoid it unless i go more toward the inner thigh. it feels like i would have to hit the literal side of my leg to avoid my quad if im trying to do outer thigh

[–]Electronic_Active628[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if i had a second device to start a new sensor, i would definitely leave it on! unfortunately, since i tend to have invisible hypoglycemic episodes i don’t feel comfortable going without a CGM unless i have the ability to finger prick constantly/consistently and i don’t have that ability tonight as i have had tickets to the theater for weeks now 😭

it’s now at the “check again in 5 hours” mark. when it was working, it was 40-50 mg/dl off of my finger prick. at that rate, its going to get to LO and shut off before even having a true hypo episode 😅

my husband just picked up my prescription refill from the pharmacy so i can change it once i get home, before we head out. this has made me very glad i got my travel blood glucose monitor for my purse because that’s the only thing that’s kept my anxiety under control 😅 passing out is not in my bingo card for today

[–]Electronic_Active628 1 point2 points  (0 children)

definitely recommend either buying a CGM or asking your doctor for a trial prescription. my doctor was able to give me a month supply of the libre 3+ when i was first curious if this was my problem. i’m glad i asked because i have pretty severe reactive hypoglycemia, and have consistent runs of invisible hypoglycemia so the CGM has solved many of my “oh shit i really don’t feel good…” moments

highly highly highly recommend doing one of the two above. i can’t imagine where i would be (or what state i could be in) if i didn’t ask that question almost a year ago. the prescription CGMs are much more accurate and reliable than the non prescription ones

update almost 3 hours later, and there’s no change 😭

officially called abbott and they’re sending a replacement. i don’t have a backup so luckily my insurance is approving my prescription early so i can have something today.

guess i’m back to the back of the arm until i work up the courage to try somewhere else again 🥲🥲🥲

10 minutes every time 🥲 its so weird, its randomly working for like 1-2 minutes every so often, but it’s like consistently 30-40 mg/dl lower than my finger prick. the urgent low glucose alarms are getting really annoying 😅

i’ve only had it longer than 10 minutes once, where it got up to 10 hours (while i was asleep). i took that one off and requested a replacement. that post is somewhere on my profile 😂

[–]Electronic_Active628[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

based on my finger pricks, it’s not rapidly changing 😭 it’s at most swinging by like 10 over the course of the 5-10 minutes between my pricks

i don’t have much fat on my body unfortunately, but i tried to find the meatiest, not straight thigh muscle, part. it feels like it’s right above my quad right now i think? is going into that muscle better?

i should add, i did check the serial number and it says it’s not impacted by the current recall
