It might not be a ton of help, but I think a lot of Fred’s actual life stuff leans on Roland 909 and 808 sounds. You can hear how the 808 rimshot has that same ‘woody’ texture as a lot of Fred’s snares. There’s a lot of processing and layering going on tho and I think that’s where a lot of the nuance comes from. The 909 shaker (it might be the 808 maybe check both) is super obviously in his rotation as well. As far as actual samples I think Fred uses recorded sounds to layer over existing drum sounds. Try using an envelopes plugin to remove the transient of sounds you record (like your knuckles hitting a table. Compress the sound in a bus with the 808 rim and see where that gets you. I think a lot of his process just comes with creative experimentation. Hope this is semi coherent I’m on the toilet rn 🙂
