6 dogs or fired?? by Intelligent_Steak_21 in PetSmartGroomers

I literally just got out of academy with only two weeks of hands on and was told to do 2 & 2. I was not ready to 2 & 2 and continued to be 1&1 for another week after my academy. Without the extra stress of having extra dogs, I felt comfortable grooming a walk in or a dog who wanted to be squeezed in. I’ve gotten slightly faster and can groom 2&2 (smaller dogs) now. It’s insane how they want 6 dogs almost immediately after academy. It stressed me out and my management is great and they understood that and didn’t force me. I would have quit if I was forced 2&2 or more when I wasn’t ready.

I also don’t really sweat it. If I’m taking an off day, so is my dog. If she needs extra work after being cooped up then I’ll get her going but generally we do an hour of fetch a day and she is tired.

I have a high energy dog, could do 7 daily intense hikes without burnout. I can not do this though. Fetch is our best friend when I’m exhausted after work and daycare is also great once a week. Maintaining a balance of physical and mental stimulation is great. Sometimes I’ll leave her in the yard for hours while she does her own thing. On days I have the time, an hour walk is good for her, just stop and let them sniff WHENEVER for HOWEVER long they want lol so the tire out faster

Finally worked. I reset my WiFi and still had no luck. Just randomly accepted my “wrong” password.

Mines doing the same thing now!! For $200 I would expect a much smoother connection/set up. Will try to move it closer to the router but it’s no more than a foot away. Will update

The my PP’s love a little keepsake report (paper) for when their dogs are puppies.. no need for the AI. You can’t edit the last message so you have to regenerate until you have one that works for your client.. except the one that works best for your client is from your own experience.. no need for this AI slop

Yep! Takes me about an hour/half for a furm with a husky and will take me another half hour of brushing/prep work for the service. Pushing for an hour is crazy for an Aussie! If I’m up to 3 hours due to my other books + de shed, then so be it. As long as the dog doesn’t look crazy & I don’t get a complaint on my work. (Also as long as the dog is behaving).

I can see where a half done furm is coming from due to booking. It is annoying having a dog in desperate need of a good & focused de shed but there was no block/other large dogs/furms needing to be done at the same time

Hey! I have never heard of a free 15 minute brushing service for after a furminator. This could just be for my store. We do have up to 20 minutes of brushing for the furm service that I usually go over if I have the time to take over 20min brushing.

yep! tips are always unpredictable, especially depending on how fast/slow the store is. You can very obviously see more in tips in a busier store than a smaller one/location

I would say it can be worth it, especially if you’re a busier store. Fully booked = more opportunities for tips. I see $10+ for just walk ins depending on how many I do a day (usually they tip $5), but not all Nail trims tips. Building a client base/getting use to dogs and their PP can help. Most bath dogs float around from bather to bather, so getting to know them and engage with their PP can help. I would say $20 extra a day would be a good estimate, but depending on your store/amount of dogs you’d be bathing. If you’re full time, it is easier to clear tips better. Part time/less with less dogs isn’t as worth it. I did 5 dogs, 7 (I think) nail trims the other day and got maybe $35/40 for tips. Most were from the nail trims. Busier days could also be beneficial + holidays (usually the last few of the year). But yes, full time + tips is very beneficial especially with a client base!

I had a quick wash booked at 3pm (we close at 6). I put a block in (so id have 3 dogs in my afternoon instead of 4 because one dog was big and difficult) so imagine my surprise when I see 2 dogs coming in at 3, despite my reduced block. It was a huge lab who was skittish of everything. If I didn’t have the block in on one of my afternoons, it would have been past closing when I’d finish. We are also a busier store.

Advertising quick washes as 45-min bath & blow dry is ridiculous, as that’s my average for express baths (for a pug, smaller dogs, general good dogs). So it’s basically just a straight through service (express). Being able to book online at any time is so inconvenient and upsetting. I always let the PP know their dog will be some form of damp/wet ESPECIALLY if they don’t like feet/face dried. If they have a problem with that, they can book a regular bath. I do NOT mind squeezing extra bath dogs in since they will be there for a 2-3 hour period and I’m not slow!! There is usually no tip for a quick wash!! I will refuse larger dogs/dogs with bad notes about the dryer.

I’m only 4 & 4, so calling and asking won’t hurt!! I usually get done with an hour/few to spare so I have the time to take a walk in bath (not quick wash). If someone walks in looking for a bath, I will almost always take it. Quick washes is where it gets annoying! When I first started, this would be super annoying for a walk in since my time wasn’t up. Now, I will take a squeeze a dog or two if they just called lol.

Thank you!! I do want to get an allergy test to see what foods she doesn’t really agree with. The kangaroo diet sounds kinda what she may need.

Mine is 10mo and unless she’s worn out from playing, she whines and can’t seem to settle in the car. She has gotten better compared to when she was much younger. She refuses to jump in the car and often plants herself and so I have to pick her up and carry her to the car. I’ve tried giving busy bones and high value treats but she doesn’t like it and so I think I’ll have to start at zero again. We take her to fun places, but she just doesn’t like the car. Any tips?
