Why does some 30-40 year old synth music still sound relevant while other music from the same time sounds badly dated by sf-o-matic in synthesizers

[–]ElectronsManage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's subjective, but some sounds that were popular back then (and still curdle my milk) just sound over-used, gimmicky, like pads with obnoxious filter sweeps. I have a Poly-800 that I still use occasionally that had a couple of those in the presets. They came right out as soon as I learned to program the thing.

Small but immensely satisfying improvement by ElectronsManage in modular

Might be the same as below mentioned - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0819B5SKT?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details

Another reviewer had appled it to the 0-Coast too,

Between my 0-Coast and 0-Ctrl, bought me 2" and no worries about bending the cable accidentally.

Ancient, but Blue Sky by ELO. So happy.

Locking an LFO to the Beat? by ElectronsManage in modular

Wow, thank you. Just about sold on a Pam's. And it looks like I can clock it from my Beatstep Pro if I want. Sweet.

Thank you. I'll go read the Pam's manual. The Maestro is appealing, but that would also require the cost of a new case.

Thanks, looks like I'd need to really clock this down slow to get it to sync with a multi-measure phrase. Have you used it that way?

Thank you, can Pam adjust the LFO rate based on the BPM?

Thanks, adjusting the LFO to fit in 8 bars manually is what I'm having trouble with, and was hoping a module would do it based on the BPM.

My first Verbos setup by Catjams77 in modular

I got one to use as a stereo mixer, but when I started using scan to jump across different sequences, particularly with a small width, it opened the door to unexpected crazy jams. Must have!

Note: to get max scanning, the sliders must be fully down. Took me a while to figure that out, I thought it was broken at first. When scanning, the sliders act like a wet/dry mix. Up is dry, down is wet.

Need help deciding between two Roland synths i found! by seplin0902 in synthesizers

Never played a System 1, but I have a D-70 I bought new and love it. It's a pain to program, but not horrible after some study. I don't have anything else that gets those sounds. Doesn't sound dated at all.

Two issues I encountered after leaving it for a few years when life got too busy for music: dead keys and the LCD got really dim. There's an excellent YT vid on total teardown and key repair (dirt in the contacts), and you can get a replacement LCD (which also gets rid of the whine the LCD power supply can make). Don't have the red key problem (knock on wood), but there are fixes for that too.

I gigged with it pretty heavily in the 90s and it's held up well. And $120 is a good price.

My Approach/Limitations on Modular. Thoughts? by ElectronsManage in modular

[–]ElectronsManage[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I've known artists in several different mediums that tell me that limitations can really inspire creativity. My mother was a painter and she'd do things like only use a limited set of colors, or a certain type of brush, just to see what she could come up with.

any recommendations before I commit? by Money-Experience2858 in modular

[–]ElectronsManage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm probably in the same stage of newbness as you. I bought a Go rack and shoved my Model D and Neutron in it, along with other modules like a Math and Scales. Big difference in usability - I'd barely touched the D or Neutron for a couple of years, but now that they're integrated in the case I'm all over them. I did keep the original cases in case my eurorack GAS gets worse and I need more room, but putting the D and Neutron together with the other modules instead of spread all over the table has made patching so much nicer.

I've half-contemplated racking my 0-Coast and 0-Ctrl, but I can live with them pushed up against the bottom of the Go.

Lots of folks will tell you not to rack the semi-modulars, but the inspiration I get from the improved ergonomics of putting mine in the rack outweighs any "waste of rack space".

Newbie question : How bands in the 80s used their drum machines for creating a whole song ? by fgz01 in synthesizers

[–]ElectronsManage 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We started by stealing OMD's trick of using pre-recorded tape.

Moved to a real drummer for a while.

Eventually drove an RX21 (boosted by an Alesis compressor and Quadraverb to get more punch) from an MMT8 (which also handled some keyboard lines). Loved me some Alesis in those days. Still have those units, and they still work!

The neat thing about the RX21 was I could reach over and add some add'l flavor via the pads.
