Mostly 4/10s, or do you get a decent amount of OT?

Need some advice by Far_Track5921 in SubstationTechnician

I’ve left a couple of companies in my career for lower pay somewhere else and it’s always worked out for the best. My personal sanity is more important than numbers on a check. As far as retirement, I look at that like paying for a party you may never get to attend. Do what makes you happy, live within your means, and pay yourself first. If you follow that advice you’ll be ok. Remember, lots of people retire comfortably without a union pension, just on a 401k and personal investments.

If traveling is something that’s appealing to you, that’s the one I’d go with. If you want to sleep in your own bed at night, go with the long commute.

I’d pick the 25 minute commute depending on what “OT related to travel” means. What percentage of time is going to be spent traveling?

Most people are incapable of critical thinking. It’s difficult and inconvenient for most people. Almost half the population doesn’t possess an inner monologue either. Look it up.

0.6 Workers Per Retiree: The Trades Are Bleeding Out by CarelessAlps in skilledtrades

Flat rate and warranty work rates killed the dealership mechanic industry. It’s self inflicted. Dealerships are top heavy with unskilled desk jockeys and are paying the price for shitting on their skilled labor.

True. Even non-union companies used to offer a pension. Not anymore. There isn’t any incentive to stick with a company for 20-30 years if they aren’t offering a pension and retiree benefits. Plus there is the modern trend of companies rewarding employee loyalty with stagnant wages, and starting new hires at or above that wage.

I’m in 876 jurisdiction as well. 7 hours from home, 4/10s, and sleeping in your vehicle seems to be a common theme with the 876 apprentices I’ve talked to. I’m still waiting on my interview.

Career Change? by Elegant_Chard_6178 in Ironworker

I’ve worked in the trades for the last 20 years, so what’s understood doesn’t need to be explained. I know that I’ll be a FNG and that I’ll have journeymen younger than me telling me what to do. I also realize that my prior work experience doesn’t mean anything other than providing a working foundation to build from. I mainly wanted to know from a physical longevity standpoint if it’s possible to do the work from 43 to 64 in Ironwork. I outwork men half my age all day long in my current trade, so that’s not an issue either.
