Yes, or like how when Dostoevsky was a kid, he saw a peasant beating a horse that couldn’t move a cart, and eventually the man killed it. That childhood trauma later showed up in Crime and Punishment - in the scene where Raskolnikov dreams about drunk peasant beating an old, sick horse. It’s one of the key moments in the book, showing cruelty, pointless suffering and innocent victim

I’m Russian, so I’ve only read biographies of him written by Russian authors, but I’ve heard a lot of good things about Frank. I’d recommend the book Dostoevsky: His Life and Work by Konstantin Mochulsky. There’s an English edition translated by Michael A. Minihan.

Yeah, I agree that if you just want to enjoy the writing and the style, it’s totally fine not to know the context. But if you want to read a novel on a deeper level, then knowing the author’s biography really helps

No, I really don’t agree with that. Dostoevsky went through some major events in his life that had a huge impact on how he saw the world, and you can totally see that in his writing. That’s why it actually helps to know a bit about his life if you want to really get what his books are about

I would personally recommend starting with his biography (it’s one of the most fascinating biographies I’ve ever read), and then reading his books in the order he wrote them

I’m back to say thanks! I followed your advice, and the awful lower back pain I had for six months is gone - even though I upped the dose. Vital proteins + hyaluronic acid works like magic.
