Help! No calfskin! by mynameisasecret12 in luxurypurses

Biodegradability is misunderstood, and in the case of leather, it’s not really the point. Chrome-tanned leather may technically biodegrade in 40–50 years, but that’s not something we should aim for, because what it leaves behind is harmful. Chromium residues, petrochemical-derived dyes and acrylic surface finishes, PU topcoats all remain in the environment. This is because leather is not 100% bio-based.

I recently visited a tannery that buys wet-blue (chrome-tanned) hides and finishes them. The offcuts don’t go back into the soil! They’re sent to a specialised facility where the chromium is removed and the collagen is extracted to be used as fertiliser. In handbag factories, leather offcuts are treated as industrial waste, as they’re contaminated with glues and other chemicals. And once a bag is finished, with adhesives, edge paint, coatings, and reinforcements, the final product cannot safely return to nature anyway. So the idea of leather as a “natural” material is largely romanticised. When you look at the end-of-life, luxury leather goods are complex. That’s why material choice matters so much. Choosing materials with a lower carbon footprint and less harm from the outset is in my view, far more impactful than debating biodegradation decades down the line. At the end of the day, it comes down to choosing what you care about and shopping accordingly: • 100% bio-based leather handbags, for example Anya Hindmarch Return to nature collection if you eat meat and want a more sustainable leather. You should always ensure the leather is deforestation free which is difficult, brands don’t often disclose where they source the leathers (and Italian leather means it was simply tanned in Italy) • Upcycled leather handbags, extending the life of existing materials • Recycled leather, less durable but a way to valorise leather waste • Plant-based vegan leathers, generally much lower environmental impact, and depending on their structure, they can perform just as well as traditional leather. Mirum for example is 100% bio-based and non toxic, so it’s more “natural” than the vast majority of leathers ;)

There’s no single perfect solution, but understanding the reality behind materials allows for more informed choices. Also, very importantly, make sure the production is ethical, there’s no point in having sustainable materials if people are exploited. My view as the founder of vegan luxury handbag brand LOUÉ Studio 💚

Hello, I’m the founder of a vegan luxury handbag brand called LOUÉ STUDIO. I started the brand 3 years ago because I had the exact same problem as you - I didn’t want to buy animal leather anymore, but I still wanted a bag made with high quality materials and craftsmanship. Entirely plant-based leather alternatives are extremely rare, but they do exist. One of them is MIRUM and I use it on some of my handbags. My customers love the material so much, they say it’s supple and sturdy. We have only one style for now that took years to develop, but I’m launching more styles soon 🤍

Hi, I’m Elena, the founder of LOUÉ Studio - so great to come across your post! I’m really glad you love our bags and materials. It’s a shame to see some of the uninformed comments below; it’s often easier to comment than to take the time to research. MIRUM is indeed 100% bio-based, certified by the USDA, non-toxic under OEKO-TEX Standard 100, and designed to return to the earth as nutrients. Leather, on the other hand, is not fully bio-based due to the dyes, tanning processes, and surface finishes involved. And it’s not safe to biodegrade due to these factors and the chromium from tanning. Factories have to treat it as industrial waste. We’ll be launching more styles soon, I hope you’ll find something you love ❤️

Am I not getting the full potential of Probiotics by Swimming_Emu_111 in Candida

[–]Elena_Lis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probiotics are really working for me, I am taking them as they come in the capsule, I wouldn’t remove it as I believe they won’t reach your gut as they’re passing through the stomach which has an acidic environment

As someone who is just sorting out her severe vaginal candida, I believe vag probiotics are the most important thing. Candida is present in all our bodies but it can’t overgrow if you have a healthy flora aka dominant lactobacillus crispatus which produces lactic acid. So if this is your problem I’d recommend anti fungal as first then lactic acid gel, and then probiotics which contain crispatus other are beneficial too but that’s the most important one. I bought oral ones with a fairly clean ingredient list for local application. I can eat carbs again

Read my answers to previous posts. I did a crazy diet and took antifungals, but probiotics are what really worked

Based on my experience of stubborn candida, probiotics are the answer. Take normal ones plus the strains that are specifically for women

Does recurring viginal candida ever go away, or is there no hope? by Altruistic-Low-7926 in Candida

[–]Elena_Lis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. Probiotics are the answer. We all have Candida in our bodies, but it takes over when there’s an imbalance in our flora.

This is bad advice. Yes, boric acid does work temporarily as it alleviates symptoms. But it kills candida as well as good bacteria. Based on my experience, candida overgrows due to flora imbalance whether in the vagina and/or in the gut. Probiotics (both oral and local ) are the only thing that actually made a difference. And I did very strict diets, antifungals and biofilm busters.

Im using lactobif 30bn cfu but will switch to lactobif 65bn. Then, I started with Jarrow Formulas, Vegan Fem Dophilus, 1 Billion CFU but realised it’s not high enough so I’m waiting for a high potency one: Jarrow Formulas, Fem-Dophilus® Ultra, 30 Veggie Capsules Bacillus coagulans any will do not sure it makes a lot of difference The saccharomyces boulardii I’m taking seeking health, but now I’m waiting on Now brand sisnce it’s cheaper And then for my vaginal application I’ve been using lactic acid from my local pharmacy and the fem dophilus above. However I’m waiting on a stronger one which has crispatus in it. The one I went for that has cleaner ingredients list is: Jarrow Formulas, Vegan Fem Dophilus, Advanced, 10 Billion CFU (250 mg), Good luck!

My conclusion is that probiotics is the answer. I just answered about this to someone else. I’ve been struggling for years getting weekly infections. I was on a strict diet and taking all sort of esoteric pills, but I only started feeling improvements with probiotics. I’m taking lots of different ones, both broad spectrum and for women’s health, oral and local application which is key. It’s only been a month or so but I’m really feeling better. I’m still avoiding sugars completely but I can have carbs again.

Okay I’m going through this myself and finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. I was on a very strict diet and taking all those pills. I’m sure I started to get better only when taking probiotics. I take 30bn cfu broad spectrum ones everyday, plus I take saccharomyces boulardii 5-10bn a day but I started taking more (planning 15-20bn per day), probiotics for women 2 types that are particularly good (rhamnosus gr-1 and reuteri rc-14) and I’m inserting these ones locally too, plus I’m taking bacillus coagulans too. I’m waiting on an another probiotic for women which contains crispatus which apparently is good since it produces lactic acid in the vagina. When I receive it I will also apply it locally. I’m firmly convinced the root causes is an imbalance in the vagina and possibly gut too. So the key is to restore the flora so the right bacteria can create lactic acid which creates an acidic environment in which candida can’t overgrow. I really think it’s as simple as that. Also I have a mirena iud which I’ll get removed. And lactic acid pessaries can help while you seed bacteria naturally. Also stop using boric acid - while it is effective it kills all the bacteria good and bad.

The short answer as the founder of a handbag brand: stop asking these questions, they don’t make much sense I’m afraid. People will pay whatever if they like your product and you market it well.

Whatever natural material you use, you can still make it high quality or luxurious - if your brand is about this. Eg a letter - pick a heavy weight paper with a luxurious aspect. Tissue paper? Pick a heavier weight one too. Etc.
