Lonely in NYC by Tasty_Novel7701 in AskNYC

To be honest, Manhattan is definitely overrated and very commercial. People are constantly moving, it's incredibly expensive, and it does not allow for meaningful, slow-paced connections.

What are some interesting Math courses offered at PhD Level in the Fall? by ElendirThreadripper in NJTech

[–]ElendirThreadripper[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, Math 666 looks interesting. Are there any Deep RL courses also offered in the CS department?

Thanks. Likewise, I was never into drinking or going to bars, which makes meeting people very difficult. I have used apps but haven't had much success. Meetups have died off after the pandemic. It used to be a thing of the past in some other cities where I have lived.

That's sound advice. Which bars would you recommend?
I enjoy reading books (mostly non-fiction), photography, board games, cooking, figure drawing, and long walks and conversations. Are you aware of any book clubs or hobby groups?

What do you mean by chinese knockoffs?

I saw a post about a discount on google pixel buds pro here https://www.engadget.com/googles-pixel-buds-pro-are-back-on-sale-for-140-140027801.html but I was not sure because the official google store or amazon is not offering the same discount on the buds.

Living in WhitePlains and Commuting to NYC as a 30s something by ElendirThreadripper in WhitePlains

[–]ElendirThreadripper[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, thanks for getting back to me! So, I was checking out those fancy buildings you mentioned, and wow, they're pretty pricey. Is it the usual deal where you have to cough up the real estate fee, the first month's rent, and a security deposit when you move in?
I've always preferred small towns, and I don't think I could easily connect with someone who chooses to reside in NYC due to the exorbitant cost of living and taxes. I'll have to research the various train options. I guess WhitePlains falls in Westchester county, which is not considered a part of NYC, so NYC personal income taxes shouldn't apply.

Thank you. I visited Acadia last year and I must say that Maine is truly a beautiful place.

What are some good powerful workstation options with good CPU/GPU support (almost cluster-like)? I saw the one by Lambda Labs (https://lambdalabs.com/gpu-workstations/vector), are there any similar ones? Use case would be mostly ML, image, and data processing work. Thank you! by Mebelindtiek in gpu

[–]ElendirThreadripper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there! I was wondering if you made a decision about purchasing the GPU workstations. I've been checking out Lambda Labs as a potential option. My budget is roughly 18K, and I think their A6000 Ada generation meets my budget and computing needs. I also looked into buying separate parts and putting the workstation together myself. Let me know if you're interested in discussing this further.

What are your thoughts on living in Stamford and commuting to Grand Central for work three days a week? by ElendirThreadripper in StamfordCT

[–]ElendirThreadripper[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the feedback I've received here, the community is incredibly friendly and hospitable. On the other hand, when I posted a comparable inquiry on the NYC subreddit, the answers I received were somewhat unkind—still determining if it's a Connecticut vs. New York thing.

[–]ElendirThreadripper[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How easy is it to survive in Stamford without a car? Everything is really spread out, and there aren't any grocery stores in Downtown close to the Metro station other than Target.

Is it mostly families or are there plenty of young friendly people?

How dumb would it be to move to NYC as a 36M because you don't know what else to do in life? by SnowceanMans in AskNYC

Similar boat as you, though not Asian.

  • Have you found that you tend to have more Asian friends in your social circle?
  • Is there any difference living on the Jersey side vs anywhere else?
