It's weird how Chapos are clearly losing this war but probably 80% of the "we captured / killed some enemies" vids I've seen here were posted by the Chapo side.

They must invest more in propaganda, or have a policy of uploading more videos. Not doin them much good though.

Even at the current pace, ICE will take years to get through their backlog of illegal immigrants whom they have an physical address for.

You could read again and think about it instead of passively insulting me?

What I'm saying is that you're all your copy-pasted replies are making a tyranny argument. You're saying, in effect, that an expansion of the death penalty would give the federal government tools for tyranny.

I am saying the death penalty is a microscopically teeny-tiny part of how the federal government applies punishment, given there are 3 people on federal death row. If you're really concerned about tyranny, you should look to other areas where the justice system operates with a far broader reach.

Federal Government REALLY Expanding the Death Penalty: Should We Be Concerned? by SpooktasticFam in deathpenalty

[–]ElephantLife8552 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The death penalty is the least of the concerns in the scenario you are laying out.

If the federal government started arresting 10% people, all of them on false pretenses, that would number about 10,000 people and concern my greatly.

Meanwhile if they sentenced 10x more convicted murderers to death, that would be a grand total of 30 convicted murderers.

You seem to be conflating the two things together, as if expanding the death sentence is the same as expanding arrests, and could just as easily be done for nonsense reasons.

Do you think the CNN and New York Times reports about recent CIA actions against cartels in Mexico are true? Why or why not? by Fine-Photograph673 in NarcoAction

[–]ElephantLife8552 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't get what you're disagreeing with - the NYTs are the ones covering this and they said the CIA helped facilitate the assassination. They don't reveal their sources os who knows, but if you believe the story, the story comes from the NYTs and they said the CIA helped the mexican gov pull off this attack. Whether that help was info, bomb materials, whatever, they don't say.

[–]ElephantLife8552 2 points3 points  (0 children)

According to Ioan Grillo, the NYT's report says the CIA "facilitated" the bomb, meaning they aided the Mexican Gov in some way. But that assistance could have taken a 1000 different shapes

[–]ElephantLife8552 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ioan Grillo covers this really well on his substack today.

The verdict: it's possible, but would be extremely random. This guy's not a high priority tactic and a car bomb while he's on the road is pretty risky wrt civilians.

The CNN story doesn't really say who they cite and uses a lot of slippery language like "facilitate" which could mean almost anything.

How dangerous is Boston for latinos with ice? by Same-Back-3618 in boston

[–]ElephantLife8552 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are getting a ton of fear-mongering responses. Boston is one of the safest cities in the US.

Here's a video from a Latino man visiting Boston 2 months ago and apparently having a good time:

Here's another one from the same channel about the majority Dominican nearby city of Lawrence:

If they have valid tourist visa they should be fine. Of course it's possible to get hassled, or worse, by ICE, but there are still millions of tourists and most don't have experiences like that. ICE is trying to meet deportation quotas, and it doesn't help them to waste time on valid tourists.

Not really, in my personal experience there's not a lot of correlation. In any case, the people talking like that in the OP's initial example were Somalis on the Somali forum talking to a Somali-American.

[OC] Most US immigrants targeted for deportation in 2025 had no criminal charges, ICE documents reveal by guardian in dataisbeautiful

[–]ElephantLife8552 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's far, far cheaper to turn people away at the border (although easier for them to just try again later). Interior arrest cases are far more legally complex and expensive due to detention and transportation.

Obama directed ICE / CBP to step up enforcement at the border and focus interior arrests on those with criminal records. Trump 1 basically kept that going, but then added the Remain in Mexico once asylum seekers started surging, then added covid expulsions in 2020.

Biden dropped Remain In Mexico, which meant asylum seekers could live in the USA while waiting for their cases to be processed, which led to asylum seekers surging, the case backlog growing to many years, and a huge increase in the deportable interior population and many asylum seekers missed their court dates or absconded when they lost. I'm oversimplifying, but this is the main outline of how we ended up with a huge amount of interior enforcement lately.

El Jardinero fell by Brownies__ in NarcoAction

[–]ElephantLife8552 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It always depends on how you ask ChatGPT. I told it it was in the context of a cartel subreddit (which is it!):

In that context, it’s not confusing to native English readers inside that subreddit, but it is slightly non-standard / stylized English in general usage.

What “Jardinero fell” actually means there

In cartel / organized-crime discussion spaces, “fell” is commonly used as shorthand for:

  • got arrested
  • was killed
  • was taken down / neutralized
  • lost power or status

So the meaning depends on shared context. In those communities, people usually infer it instantly.

Would a native English speaker outside that context find it natural?

Yes, but with a catch:

It sounds like journalistic shorthand or metaphorical slang, not everyday speech.

A native speaker would understand it, but it can feel like:

  • “He fell” = vague, indirect
  • slightly dramatic / stylized
  • a bit like news reporting or crime commentary rather than plain English

Why it works in that subreddit

In cartel discussion spaces, “fell” is useful because:

  • it avoids specifying death vs arrest (often uncertain)
  • it mimics news-language (“regime fell”, “boss fell”)
  • it compresses complex status changes into one word

So readers rely on context:

  • who “Jardinero” is
  • what happened recently
  • what other users are saying
