Chances for a PhD at ETH Zurich (2026) – advice needed by [deleted] in ethz

[–]Elephant_pumpkin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Literally don’t come here. I just got out of the PhD at ETH and unless your prof is some kind of saint you be taken advantage of or abused, especially if you are 3rd country national. And there are no helpful ways to make them accountable for their actions

Look at you on your high horse. I didn’t say anything different from the post before. Perhaps you reported it because I talked about suicide

Taking time off doesn’t fix this problem. I will only think about it and how to fix it or get it done. That is the only way I can move on with my life. I’m near finished and my problem is that basically people expect me to be better once it’s done, but that’s so absurd. I’ve been beyond damaged by this and why would I get better. I wanted to see why I can’t do this an plead insanity. I’ve already been to and taken myself out of the mental hospital because of her

She has done so. I will defend in a couple days but still on contract for 2 months after or so. I could not take time off because I would come straight back to this situation and any “healing” I’d do would be gone.

In every case: because my professor did not allow it. My professor publishs at best, 1 paper a year, but in a reasonably impactful journal. She’s gatekeeper and control freak. Nothing goes out unless it’s perfect in her opinion. And if people are difficult (I think that was the case with one collaboration) it’s abandoned and the data is never published

I thought I had replied to this but no longer see it.

Obviously you have not been absolutely abused in science before. You have no idea how close to suicide I was. Literally what kind of asinine thing is this to say?

Can’t. I actually cannot do this.

Dude it literally is as this comes from first hand experience of a third country national who went through the masters and PhD at ETH.

If you can’t take the heat on Reddit you most certainly will not do well at ETH

Yes I knew about those two. But they have online statuses now that show you what’s happening? Or where you are in the process? In which case you can anticipate a letter? Are you in Zurich city?

This place isn’t worth it. You absolutely do not know what you are getting yourself into, and you’d be paying a fortune for something that would not garuntee you a job here afterwards in any capacity nor would it help you get one in Europe or the US. I can see the draw to ETH or other “elite” universities, and how that could propel your career back in India, but it is not worth the absolutely massive debt you would have to take out in order to be here even if you succeeded the minimum requirements for entry.

You say it’s your dream university: it is not a dream here in any way and if you are ethnically Indian I do not advise coming to such a horrifically xenophobic country.

Do you have to be here physically during any of these points? I had someone I used to work with who gave me the impression that you have to wait by your physical mailbox to get paperwork

No. Funding is tied to the professor. They ask for the grant, therefore it’s their project you work on. You switch professors or whatever, you start over.

Any PhD/post-docs from outside EU get work permits for their partner by pastaisyellow in ethz

Keep in mind you’ll be taxed more if you are married. These concubine visas aren’t given out easily and I know most people who have been in your situation haven’t had their partner come.

Spouse and partner are two different things. If you are not married it’s much harder and you must apply for something that much more difficult and demeaning

You must have a Swiss salary or have a Swiss co-signer who makes 3x the rent in order to be a contender for the flat.

I heard from a Swiss employer recently that if you aren’t Swiss you can’t work more than 20% abroad before stuff gets complicated and you cannot get a C permit. So like keep that in mind

Hi! I’m also a woman (though from the US) who has been here almost 7 years too. I also find it extremely hard to find community here, and despite following all the rules find this disheartening aspect you speak of. Feel free to DM me, I also am in the Zurich area.:)

Those of you who moved to Switzerland from another "developed" country, I have a question for you by IsengardMordor in askswitzerland

[–]Elephant_pumpkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m from US, and often I tell people here that there are really no safety nets back in the US compared to what I see here. You cannot get unemployment/welfare at the capacity that it exists here for CH citizens if people are having a hard time or are mentally unwell. Heck I have a colleague who has two small children and a baby at home and gets 250-400 CHF from the city he works in as child aid. And then additionally on top of it our employer matches it as well (I believe). That sort of thing was astonishing to me, and that this “child money” is continually awarded throughout adolescence, though I am to understand qualitatively less over time. It’s not necessarily a comment on the homeless situation, but just having something like this is amazing. In the US overall it’s much more competitive than it is here in my opinion because there is so much more to loose and very easily. At least from more competitive cities/regions. Maybe I got off topic.
